I think its totally depends on your goals… what is the right gear for you…
some people just want to have fun with there machines. they know they in it for the long run… so why not buy a machine that gives you lots of possibilities… and have fun for a decade trying out all combinations you can think of with your gear… on a semi-daily basis
Some people just want to play with cheap toys once every few weeks… sit down for an hour… and thats it…
Some people have complete idea’s for hour long sonic adventures and want to sculp that to the best of their abilitites… end they prob end up with a whole lot of gear that helps them to get there …
me personally… i did have budget for 2 nice machines i can use in multiple ways on my kitchentable on a semi-daily basis… so i got elektron-stuff… nice, smallish, lots of ways to use them…
and yeah, i got some cheap toys as well… just for the fun of it…
If you had a gun to my head and I had to blow as close to 10 as I could on a single synth that’s (possibly) good, then the Macbeth Elements or the Modal 008 (subject to availability).
But if there was a gun involved I’d want the holiday anyway.
If you are crossing the desert wth a bag of daimonts. and you are very thirsty but you have no water. and a man shows up with 1 glas of water, and he’s willing to give you this glass but only in exchange for your daimonds, would you do the deal ?
Is it possible to know what you would do ?
Has the opinion of others any meaning for U when you’re really thirsty ?.
What really matters is what you’re thirsty at -how thirsty you are - what’s in your bag - and how mutch you are attached to it.
To know that you must be in the situation.
If you are thirsty enough there’s no doubd in you.
It all depends on what kind of music you want to make.
My ideal setup would be Analog Four / SH-101 / Analog Rytm / Prophet VS.
I already have the first two, I am thinking of selling my Pro One and JX-3P+ Patch Editor to get the Rytm. The VS will have to be from some freelance design work
I think you can do A LOT with just a DSI Prophet 12. Good money spent there I would think. Add an Analog Rytm and I would think you are good to go with some extra scratch in your pocket.
Blown out (to the last cent) the entire stack on some whores I just used to appreciate a lot as human beings, while havin good time with a cracked cubase
the arp 2600 is one of the coolest synths i have ever tried.
i´d buy it immediatley if i was rich.
even with (only) 10000 dollars left i would not buy it.
I would keep the MD/MM, but as far as how to spend 10k…
-A mint Alesis Andromeda A6. Goes for about $3,500
Spec wise, it is effectively a 16 voice Analog Keys with an extra LFO per voice, and costs less per voice. Make sure all voices are tested OK.
-Moog Voyager Rack. Around $1900 used/mint.
No need to screw around with lesser mono synths when this one is an option.
-DSI Poly Evolver KB + Poly Evolver Rack. $2800 used.
Gotta have the weird digital/hybrid.
These are the synths I would own if I could afford them. None would go to gigs. All would go into recorded productions and each would make it into an OT for live stage manipulation.
-Soundcraft Signature 22 MTK. $799 new. To be available any day now.
Gotta get all those voices into the computer or into an OT.
If I really ha to much money I’d buy a decent mobilehome - a good mixer - and some weatherproof small PA + some crazy lights and a strong Group for electricity >>> So i could organies gigs wherever I travel and invite other musicians to jam.
A4 + AR + MD + MM + SH 101 … current setup … off course I am lusting for a Juno106 (and I think this is just natural progression, you just have to have one for a while) …
and I need to have a moog, period. why? because, I want to feel the moog thing on my finger tips (call it ego, call it marketing,… no discussion has to come, might not stay)
if you do the above math and factor in some savings , you can easily get to 10k + / - monitors here, software there, PC this, interface there, yadiyadiyada …
so if I had my dream setup, I am afraid that I would be better off, spending the cash on another unit, which is expensive as fuck. …
or, would it be better to have several small units… but honestly AR / MD is already 1 redundant … MM hate love relationship … Juno / SH101 just figured out I really like the Retro Wave / OutRun genre …
goddamnit …
anyways. I am looking into the synth suggestions from you guys…
trabanT,
I say stick with what you got. Your setup is quite complete as it is.
If you want that Juno106 for big 6 voice pads then I say save ye pennies and add it on. (also, consider Ensoniq SQ-80 for such purposes). When money is a factor, I think a used Sub Phatty is a great moog option, too.
Just because Elektron instruments aren’t $4,000 vintage instruments doesn’t mean they are worth less and should be liquidated in order to purchase something that is ultimately less capable but less available and therefore more expensive.
Also, I don’t think MD, and AR overlap, not one bit.
And try sequencing/p-locking those Volcas with your MnM, lots of fun to be had there.
What kind of synth are you interested in? What sort of features do you need that you don’t have?
More poly? Weird wavetables? Heavier modulation options?
and via a good mixer with enough aux - returs it becomes 1 big synth with the advantage you can experiment in changing the way all parts interact. It becomes a modular by the mixer.
Some around here suggested a A8 but I prefer an
AK + A4 ( or 2 A4’s ) as I have now. There’s much more possebillities than having it in 1 machine. I’m trying to money aside to have a good mixer - I think in this way every little machine gains in value. Even a crappy 2hand instrument or any sound-source can be fantastic thru a good mixer - going in - out tru others - FX etc…

that is an excellent question (and I have to admit, I have no idea! ) … to be honest… I just recently learnt in this forum that this very sound I was after, is probably not feasable to make without added computer manipulation …
thanks for ur previous text on that my setup is pretty solid already … ( i did plock the volcas, and was "boy, am I happy I didnt sell MD or MM)

that is a REAL good point with the Mixer ! … right now I felt often so uncomfortable with pluggin this in and that out … I got the AH ZED 10 (non fx) … I was really looking forward to OB to have more free slots on the mixer and on my stereo sound card interface (focusrite 2i4) … yeah good point… I should look into “layering and combining” …
