1010music Bluebox

I’m curious how the internal reverb and other effects are.

If they’re anything like the Blackbox ones, they’re probably pretty good. I’ll be using them a lot for test.

I just picked up a k-mix, after the bluebox was announced.
K-mix list price is very expensive, but deals pop up now and again. It has its pros and cons like everything- but I love the AUX sends for tying my samplers ins and outs together. Still have a bit to learn about it.

The blackbox is a great product, and I’m sure the blue will also be good.

I just get this feeling that 1010music is growing faster than they can handle.
For example, they never released any docs to accompany the most recent major firmware update; one that included visible interface changes. (Someone correct me if there’s a 1.6.5 doc in existence)

Perhaps it’s nit-picky but I’m not going all-in on more of their gear if they can’t support what’s already been released.

And the k-mix is a decent audio interface.

Cool! I’d be curious to whether it could work really without exporting to a daw, so wether for a rough sketch and mix it would be enough to compose a track, export and done. But maybe this isn’t really what it’s intended for?

It really is.

Honestly my K-mix likely isnt going anywhere.

I also understand that the Bluebox might never be an interface.

I can see compatibility issues with ever-evolving OS and DAWs out there being a challenge, amongst other things.

It is probably too demanding for 1010’s small team.

Like the Blackbox, the Bluebox is probably best suited as a niche mixer/eq/recorder that does what it says it does, dont buy it for a hopeful feature that may never come.

Hopefully it does well what it is set out to do.

I do think it is. The Blackbox can do this already, albeit crude. So this one will most likely be good at just that.

General sound quality, noise floor, latency, etc.
1010’s website shows no tech specs at all at this time.

Thanks for doing that :pray:t2:

Yep, I’ll be watching that closely. For me, the main battle will be the philosophical question on whether a modern, digital mixer with synced multitrack recording and post-processing offers so much more to the workflow, that it’s worth going for that instead of a traditional, high end console? It’s not a vs. thing, it’s more a way to get an idea of where you’re really at in your workflow and what works best for you in your way to produce music.

I know that for myself, the Bluebox on paper is much more appropriate for the way I work. But the SSL SiX brings something entirely different to the table, and when does such a difference matter? And more importantly, does it matter to you?

@circuitghost

I’m curious how the bluebox handles fx. Are returns added to the mix or can you assign the returns to a channel.

Interested in how it deals with ground noise, humming etc. So many unbalanced cables so close together…

The Blackbox does okay with this, so I’m guessing the Bluebox will, too. But we’ll see  it’d be a bit of a miss if a mixer with so many inputs and outputs has a noise ratio that’s just too loud for comfort.

Yes, but there is the obvious physical difference that could possibly lead to noise buildup (i hope not):

Blackbox: 1 stereo input jack
Bluebox: 6 stereo input jacks

Looking fwd to the review!

I would imagine that if the source is clean, it won’t make much of a difference, but perhaps it’s more sensitive to anything that’s grimy in itself. Plug in six volcas, you might get a lot of noise. Plug in six Moogs, perhaps not.

But we’ll see  I found myself a Tempest now, I’ll be running all its outputs into the Bluebox and, as the kids used to say back then, pump up the volume. That one’s a noisy bastard, so we’ll see who’s left bleeding when I’m done.

Not to derail but since you’re joining Le Club Tempest and using it to test the BlueBox, I recommend checking out Noir et Blanc Vie’s comments about the effect of pre / post filter settings at around the 59:40-minute mark in the following vid:

Of course, the sources will define the sum.
An interesting worst use case would be having all inputs plugged in, in an electrically very noisy environment. Basically emulate a crowded DJ booth in an (empty ) venue, where the Bluebox will be surrounded by PSUs, mobile phones, record players, etc. Input cables in a tangle etc.
I’m rooting for the Bluebox, it would be a fantastic live session tool.

PS. Exacerbate the worst use case with two of the inputs being microphones…

Thanks. Yep, I’ve checked out all his posts on the Tempest. Very informative and entertaining. I’ve actually been in club Tempest for some time, it’s one of my on and off-instruments. Like, now I have one. Ah, it’s a mess, I’ll lose it. Then, missing it. Oh, there’s one at a solid price. I’ll get one again. And around and around we go.

Since 2014, in my case

But around here, people haven’t caught up on the rising second hand value of the Tempest yet, so this one’s a downright investment, if one chooses to look at gear that way.
