A word of caution: OS1.20b can functionally brick an AK

I just heard back from Support that I will need to send my AK to Sweden, and from the linked thread, apparently I’m not the only user experiencing this.
I wouldn’t be making this post if I was the only reported case, and the thread I’m linking to doesn’t have a clear enough title.

Basically the OS update works, but once you get past the screen displaying the Elektron logo and the OS#, you get stick in a UI Needs Updating/Please Restart loop, that cannot be reliably fixed by booting in test mode and reloading either OS1.2 or 1.12e, although that has worked for some users. Test mode will report that the UI version is 1.3 and that everything passes the checks.

This is not affecting all AK users, but just so people know, it is possible.

When did you bought the AK?

Last November.

uhm…I havent heard about OS problems in that series. Maybe beta version of overbridge is the main issue.

I bought my AK new about a month ago. First OS update was to 1.2. It had this issue.

Im guessing it may have something to do with the update process, maybe jumping from factory OS to 1.2, or something. Who knows. It would be really nice to know why, so it can be prevented in the future. I had to pay $60 and have this thing out for service for 6 fucking weeks for this… and I was actually using this thing as master keyboard for work, as in income, as in to pay the bills. So thats a big problem for me. Depending on how all this gets resolved is going to determine the future of elektron in my world, but its certainly not off to a good start.

Its one thing if you can just install an OS and leave it forever, but if they are putting out OS with known bugs that kill functionality, you have to upgrade to fix it, so the upgrade process needs to be flawless because its required. I never would have attempted to try the 1.2 if I had known there was a risk of this issue… I just wanted to check out overbridge, but from what Ive been reading it wouldnt help me anyways… so I really could have saved the trouble here.

All in all, extremely unhappy so far. Thats my experience, your mileage may vary - and good for you if you love it, no need to chime in with “everything is great over here!!”, yes we already know that, thanks anyways.

Man, I love my AK so much; it’s never done anything weird!
Sometimes I successfully update the OS just to have a laugh!
That’s crazy that mine’s so awesome and yours is so crippled and diseased.

Dont worry, you’ve got some real fun coming your way too!

:imp:

A failed attempt at humor.
To those who it’s affected - gutted for you. Hope it’s resolved as smoothly and painlessly as possible.

If you notice at the AK support page OS 1.2 doesn’t figure. I’m thinking Elektron’s update for overbridge is the problem. They launched an OS update non well tested.

Any problems with OS 1.12 version?

Homeboy signed up for the beta. Mad that gear gets bricked. Beta testing duhhhhhh. Don’t upgrade your OS before shows. Double duhhhh.

Hey guys, update: Elektron sent me a UPS shipping label, they’re covering the shipping costs.
It’s a bummer to have to send it off, but at least they’re owning the mistake.

Diapause - isn’t there already another thread for complaining about people complaining about stuff? I really just wanted to put up a warning for AK users who hadnt’ tried 1.20b yet, since I doubt I would have tried putting it on if I’d seen a clear warning like this beforehand.

edit: Now I remember why I stopped checking in this forum.

Pretty sure that with EVERY OS update, there is someone posting here with problems of it not booting up afterwards.

I don’t know if there’s any reason to think that this one is any more dangerous than any other update -plenty of us have upgraded with no problem.

This is the first OS update I’ve done on the MDUW, MDUW Mk2, MnM, MnM Mk2, OT, or AK in the last 8 years that has been an issue.

As I said up front in the first post there, I wouldn’t make this post unless I’d seen that other users were experiencing the same thing. If I’d found those posts earlier, I probably would have waited, but I tend to stay away from Elektronauts these days because of the general tone here.

An OS update, beta or no, shouldn’t be able to get a unit into a state that you can’t fix from safe mode, unless the user screws up and powers the unit down during the middle of the flash rewrite, in which case it’s on the user.

Since Elektron Support hasn’t raised the possibility that I somehow messed up the install (which is a fair question to ask in the situation), and that their first suggestion (not counting ‘try booting it up in Safe Mode and then restart it’) has been to ship it back to them, it seems like it’s an actual problem, and worth letting people know is something that can potentially happen.

You’re cool. It’s booty that your Ak is out. I’ve had issues with my gear and elektron helped me out no prob.

Only a few units are affected by this, and those are the first batch of Keys released. Usually you can get it out of the UI upgrade loop yourself by following these steps:

[ol]
[li]Press and hold function during power up to enter the Early Startup menu[/li]
[li]Wait for 30 seconds[/li]
[li]Turn the machine off[/li]
[li]Wait for 30 seconds[/li]
[li]Turn the machine on[/li]
[/ol]

If that doesn’t work we unfortunately have to take the machine in for service.

Good to know
