Keep both ! Poly 8 with a split setting !
Yep keep both. Spouse will get over it
Poly 8 with split sertting ?
There’s nothing the Elektrons do to aid this … any voice/chord splitting would have to be done externally either with dedicated tools or software … a simple task in Max e.g.
Making a poly 8 is an intriguing idea.
What would I need to do? Hook both up to my laptop via USB and run them through a custom max/msp patch?
The name writes itself: “Octalog” …
On a separate note, I’m growing to love the A4 mini keys/buttons. It makes everything more direct and you feel closer to the sequencer and the encoders for p locks
The fun stuff in Max would be straightforward but based on your own ideas of how best to monitor and split midi chords to two destinations … alternatively there are products (perhaps like this one) I haven’t checked that this trick is in its arsenal
Yep easy to split with the Ep+. Midpal/midibro…
Maybe doable internally with AK Multi Map. You can assign external midi control with it.
Wonder if I could use iConnectMidi4+ for this
yes, thats possible with the iconnectmidi (send it to two targets and do a channel remap). this thing is very capable, but i hate to program it.
the X-Key 37 is great with the A4.
din midi, 3 octaves, velocity, aftertouch (in fact polyphonic aftertouch for synths and software that respond to it)
slim profile but not mini keys.
if you can work with 25 medium keys, the arturia is nice.
you can program 8 scenarios (i mostly just use the pads for muting), midi switching is easy - so you can change between transposing and playing.
negative: no 5pin midi, so you need an usb host - i prefer wheels against touch strips (they are not bad) and i don’t like endless encoders on external controllers.
Did you try Multi Map on AK ?
Assign a range with one or several sounds, and another range to external midi. That way you can even control A4’s Multi Map with AK’s Multi Map !
Perf to control them both.
The Arturia Keystep! Its very compact thanks to small keys which however feel great (unless most keyboards with small keys). It has an awesome price and many features (midi out, cv out, complex arpegiator and sequencer). So it’s not only useful for the a4.
A second vote for Keystep. Very playable and versatile.
@cosmic @123alastairj @flocked @bradleyallen (i saw you praise it on another forum)
and any key step users …
How is your after touch response across the keyboard range folks ?
I have a few keys that are either too eager to send or need some additional encouragement (to put it mildly) … what’s odd is that the neighbours of the keys and the vast bulk of the keys are in the same ballpark so it’s quite noticeable, especially the one which is almost triggering on normal playing
it’s easiest to test when you do something like a wavetable scan on a blofeld, but pitching an A4 oscillator would be very useful as a metric … comparing consistency
otherwise the device is highly recommended … sure, it’s budget, don’t expect perfection, but I’m curious if mine is typical
Haven’t had that problem myself, but will do some testing with the Blofeld to see if I can recreate the behaviour
I recreated it with another unit at the store, it was in exactly the same position (the lowest G#) that the AT was triggering early and had a very different response profile to all other keys … you could just about go straight to AT in normal play … the original one I had was also showing the opposite behaviour in 2 higher ‘ivory’ keys … it would take some considerable effort beyond the normal to get those to fire full range … the replacement does not suffer the same, so it was an easy replacement although the G# is just as ‘keen’ … I’ll ask someone I know at Arturia if there’s a way I can mod it to compensate, but it’ll have to do … it only matters for one note and on certain modulation destinations … I’ve yet to try the other sensitivity profiles in the editor, they may mask the inconsistency better
Basically, I guess it’s a size/quality/budget expectation thing, really happy, I think I prefer the white to the black finish … if anyone has feedback or comment, please PM me from this post to avoid it going too off-topic … and on that, it’s a great size to lay in front of the A4 (wish it had side entry MIDI though)
Nice that it can be clocked by the A4 using the CV side if you don’t want to take your MIDI that way
Thanks everyone - I’m going to go for the Keystep. Even if I don’t try to create a poly8 synth from the AK/4, it looks like a versatile device…
Anyone knows what type of keybed on the Analog Keys?
