Aphex Pad

Ok, I know his sounds were copied so often, but just as reference. Can anyone get the A4 in a similar direction. I tried it often but fail getting the filter sound so warm. I also have problems with envelope attack for pads in the A4. I came much closer using abletons operator with just 2 operators used. and big reverb of course.
Anyone want to give it a try?

Ambient Works. :content:
Pads are overdrived, or bad recording ?
4th interval ?
Pulse wave ?
Subs ?

What are your close settings ?

I guess filter andd reverb settings are the key. My pads mostly sound little too harsh or too dull. can’t find the sweet spot :slight_smile:
But I’m sure it’s possible

First try, not exactly the same but from init kit :
Key=Eb (with+30 fine tune)
Wav=Saw?
Maybe better with pulse.
I like it with Tri !
Filter 1=65
Res 25 (neutral)
Filter 2=off (max with LP)
Osc1 fine tune +30
Sub - 2
Osc2 fine tune +30
Tune=-5
AMP Attack=56
Reverb Decay=92
Overdrive=32

I believe this is an SY99, key indeed is in fx and a solid rompler/fm base. A4 should be able to do warm pads, but this is pretty digital-sounding(in a good way).

yes, I guess it is simple two or three operator fm. But just as reference, if the A4 can come anywhere close

nice. I’ll try it

I actually think it sounds a lot more like the AWM side of the SY, it has a really nice grainy character. For pads the reverb is really your main friend when it comes to this sort of carpet pads.

What’s AWM?
Yeah reverb is very important here. I often use the valhalla plugins for these kind of sounds. But the A4 reverb is great and should do the job I guess

The rompler side

ok. Interesting. Never heard of that SY99. Will have to watch some videos :slight_smile:

I believe SY99 has not much in common with my QY100 ?

Its sort of like the granddad of the Yamaha Montage, with some extra tricks up its sleeve. You can even use the waveforms from the rompler side and use those with the fm engine for modulation! And like I said, the fx engines are great, two SPX-990’s inside! Loads of great albums made with it, SAW I and II, lots of Monolake stuff from the old days, etc

Used to be my absolute dream when it came out, but way too expensive. Now they are pretty cheap so I’m living the dream :smiley:

the problem with the envelope attack I have is: If I use a curve without retriggering, than the Attack is only slow on the first note, but not on the following… If I use one with retiggering, it’s working but it has a little click in the beginning.

Interesting results with TRI WAV and Unison.
Increase PW for harmonics.

I found the midi file for the rhubarb chords. Gives me lot of inspiration for nice pads right now.
I’m trying your filter settings… Osc1 saw (triangle with PW most to the right) with AM modulated by Osc2 pulse. Osc2 level off, tuning +24. Osc drift off, Osc retriggering. Sounds little more digital, clearer in that way in my feeling.
Sounds not the same, but also nice :smiley:

Ok. Here is what I learned (again) from 1 hour pad exploration.

  • the A4 sounds awesome and can do pads very well
  • I love the AM in the A4. Great for pads
  • Reverb is most important here. I threw a Valhalla shimmer plugin on the A4 and it took it to a whole other place, soundwise

You can try high rate lfo on pitch for FM too. :wink:
