So this isn’t what most are using the OT for, and probably not what most of you would think of by the word Dub.
Many years before Octatracks and A4s and Computers I was doing Dub Reggae. Hence the name “First Love” Dub. I decided to get back inna mi roots and use my Elektron machines to get back into Dub Reggae.
Elektron OT for all Looping duties of real instruments: Guitar, piano, etc… A4 doing the bubbly percussive organ sound.
Tempest along with Samples on an ES-1 for drums
BSII for Bass.
Sorry kids, no dubstep for me. This is DUB. Ya Mon!
This is exactly the sort of thing that I call dub.
Really nice, I checked your other jam too, top. Great production and nice sounds. My only other comment might be to run your basslines through a low pass filter with a bit of resonance to give it a bit of a deeper sound.
Thanks for having a listen guys! Appreciate the compliments and suggestions!
Ya, I’m probably a little too bitter about dubstep taking over the world and dub reggae never really getting enough props. Glad to see y’all think of this style when hearing ‘dub’ ; ) The term gets thrown around alot of ways now, usually with little reference to reggae.
If you are enjoying the dub, I have a full playlist full of other dubs I’ve done on my site here:
I use a few different delays for dub.
The Main one being Roland RE-201 Space Echo tape delay. Lots of maintenance, but the only way to really keep it ROOTS!
I also use the Roland RE-20 Space echo pedal sometimes. Can dial in a pretty similar sound to the real tape echo
I use a TC Nova Repeater when I want to get some cleaner repeats that don’t distort so quick when you slam the feedback.
I use a Ibanez AD-200 analog delay for really quick metallic slapback stuff.
I’ve always wanted to try a Strymon El Capistan for dub. every vid I’ve seen sounds so awesome like a real tape echo.
The key to dub delay is more the timing and getting the swing of the triplet repeats jiving with the hi hat.
BIG UP guys glad you all enjoying these dubs
I agree about “dubstep”, it has as much to do with dub as “R&B” has with proper R&B. Having said this I’m sure there are guys making proper dubstep with actual dub elements, but that is not what we are talking about here.
For me dub is not strictly just tied to reggae either, sure that is where its roots lie, but the technique is applicable to many other styles, I had quite a lot of electro dubs in the 80’s, and I do eventually plan on making some acid dubs myself.
ooohhh Acid Dubs! I like the sound of that! Yes, I love how the dub techniques and sensibilities that started back in the day with roots reggae are still now being applied in so many different kinds of music.
That kind of prepared me for jumping into this crazy world of elektrons and synths and sequencers coming from a funk and reggae band background ; )
More dubs to come! Thanks again darenager.
Post some acid dubs, mon!
Recently got an octatrack for a live machine digital reggae dubwise project (no midi, no computer) and the start has been difficult with the octatrack and I was not too sure when I purchased the OT if it will do the job. After extensive practice and reading the manual 20 times + few hours on elektronauts, I eventually managed to get some pleasing results. Pretty basic in terms of arrangements.
I did this jam with a lonely A4 pattern and live tweaking about 1 year ago…not even close to your finished track but I still like it. Maybe I’d have to make it a proper tune
