Control MnM with OT

Hello friends. I have never really midi sequenced anything before other than sending clock and tempo info to my other Elektron units. I’m trying to give midi sequencing a go now by controlling my mnm with my OT. I don’t understand any of the mnm parameters from the manual. And any midi programming Search gives me the midi 101 lesson.

Could someone please give me some direction? And maybe a link to some more advance midi programming info? Also, how do I send these notes to the mnm?

Thanks

So much to unpack here. You can go deep, or shallow.

I would actually recommend just sending clock and transport to the MM, and creating patterns on the MM, this way you have teh flexibilty to control them separately, I like to have my OT set up as a drum/effects/sampler with the MM being my bassline/synth/percussion handler. All you’ll need is a midi cable going from the out of the OT to the in of the MM.

Send transport/clock is in the project settings on the OT under midi/sync (from memory). You should also make sure the OT is only sending midi notes internally, or tracks 1-6 will trigger the MM tracks as well.

Though if you want to also sequence the MM from the OT, you need to set up midi tracks on the OT, set up the midi channel by double tapping playback. The Midi CC numbers in the manual correspond to the CC configurations you can set up on the two ‘effects’ pages. It’s easier if you just look at the manual to work out how to set these up, than me trying to describe it.

See if this helps, if not will need more details on where exactly you are getting lost.

look what i just saw

So let’s assume that you have clock/tempo sync and transport between OT and MM sorted out.

You don’t need either of those things if you are sequencing the MM from the OT because the OT sequencer sends the MIDI Note messages to the MM at the right time.

Stage 1: MIDI Note messages

In the OT’s MIDI sequencer, choose one track for sequencing and set the MIDI channel number to match that of the target track on the MM. (You can find and set the numbers in the MM’s GLOBAL > CONTROL > MIDI CHANNELS menu.)

MIDI Note messages contain a note number, velocity, and length. Set the default values on the OT’s MIDI sequencer track. Record some trigs. P-lock the values of note, velocity, and length to make melodies. P-lock values of NOT2, NOT3, and NOT4 to make chords.

Stage 2: MIDI Control Change messages

The parameters of the MM’s synth machines can be controlled by MIDI Control Change (CC) messages. To find out which parameters are controlled by which CC messages, look in Appendix B of the MM manual.

As an example, say you want to control Filter Width of the MM machine: in the table in the manual, the decimal CC message number for Filter Width is 73.

Now in the OT’s MIDI sequencer, on the CTRL 1 SETUP page for track that you want to use, use knob C to set CC1 to control message number 73.

Now, on the CTRL 1 page, you can control the MM’s Filter Width by using knob C to set the default value or to set p-locks of the value per step.

Other stuff

The OT’s knobs usually send out MIDI messages when you are controlling its audio tracks. You might need to deactivate AUDIO CC OUT and AUDIO NOTE OUT on the OT to prevent spurious messages from controlling your MM.

This is just the start. Give it a try and let us know how it goes.
