hey there folks.
okay so here’s the gist of it.
I have an OT Mkii as master clock out to a DT, and MIDI going out through the ‘thru’ port out into my korg minilogue XD.
I’m trying to setup this up so that when i change patterns on the OT the DT fallows right along, but i DONT want the MinilogueXD to fallow as I’m using a track on the OT in MIDI mode to do all my program changes from manually.
A weird issue I’m having is that for some reason or another it seems my OT or DT is sending some strange seemingly random program change message across the chain and causing the preset to change on the minilogueXD… then back again at the end of the pattern.
only what i can stop this is if i COMPLETLY disable program change messages from being sent all together… but then i cant get the DT to fallow pattern changes from the OT.
I will admit here that my know how as far as understanding how MIDI works is just about 2%… so… that’s the root of my issue for sure.
but needless to say… i need some milk help please
Elektron devices use Programme Change messages to tell one another to cue up a pattern. It almost makes sense if you think that (on most Elektrons) each pattern is associated with a kit, a part or similar “programme”… but only just.
Because you have configured the OT to drive the DT (sync, programme/pattern changes), those programme changes might also get sent to the XD.
I don’t have either a DT or an XD (I have an OT and AR), so my advice will have to be a bit general rather than specific to your devices.
1
Pick a channel for the XD, e.g 1. Configure your OT to send MIDI data on that channel. Set the XD to receive on that channel.
2
In the OT MIDI Sync options, configure the Send Clock and Transport to on (and Recv to off). Also configure the OT to Send Pgm Ch messages ON, and set the Send Pgm Ch Ch to something different from the channel you picked for the XD. e.g. 2.
3
In the DT MIDI Sync options, configure it to Receive Clock and Transport ON. Then set it to Recv (receive) Pgm Ch ON, and set Recv Pgm Ch Ch to match the one the OT sends on (e.g. 2)
Summary settings:
OT:
Track for the XD: MIDI Ch 1
Send Pgm Ch Ch: 2
DT:
Recv Pgm Ch Ch: 2
Send Pgm Ch Ch: off
XD:
MIDI Channel 1
All you have to do to achieve this is to to set MIDI Rx Prog Chg in the Minilogue XD’s Global Edit settings to “Off”.
If you have connected the DT’s MIDI Thru to the MIDI In of the MXD then there is no way for MIDI messages from the DT to reach the MXD.
The OT can send MIDI Program Change messages in two ways:
- when you change a pattern with PRG CH SEND activated in the project settings,
- when you change to a pattern associated with a different Part and you have set a value for PROG on a MIDI sequencer track that is sending to the MXD.
These two methods are separate so you should be clear about which one you want to use.
