For some reason I am very interested in different kinds of development. Maybe because of my study psychology, maybe because of my previous job as agile coach, or maybe because I work as a lecturer right now. it always has something to do with development.
so…
When I am in the studio with the other musicians in our Rotterdam studio building, it is clear they think about 1 way of development. To say it as short as possible:
Just do what you love and what you feel you need to do… You will easily make a lot of ours with it… and because of the fact you like it to work like this, it will make you very good and very special too.
I understand this way of thinking… but…
My parents are very much interested in discipline:
There are a lot of things you don’t want to do in live… but if you have lot of discipline, you will do these things, and you will develop yourself very well.
____
What do you think… or what do you do? Just force yourself to do things you ‘need’ to learn, or just go with the flow and do what you love to do???
I would have to say I sometimes struggle with self discipline. Example would be I am trying to become a better keyboard player and it is hard to sit down and learn new keys etc. when I can just sit down and twiddle knobs on my Elektron gear I know deep down that my tracks will improve soo much if I learn some more music but after a hard week at work I just want to indulge myself and be lazy.
But what I have found to be true about life is summed up in the old cliche “no pain, no gain”.
I think it’s a combination. First of all, you should distinguish between initial decisions (decisions about which route to go down) and decisions on the way down that route.
Initial decision: choose what you want, what’s best for you, what you’re dreaming of.
Later on: you definitely need a lot of discipline! dreams are not put into practice by fairy queens… For instance, practicing piano needs a lot of patience for boring exercises before you can do a concert, and it’s similar with electronic gear, jobs or other life decisions. someone who just follows the flow will probably stop practicing after some weeks.
However, don’t be too strict. It’s never too late to change a path. except when you’re dead
@buzz: good point, it’s also important to relax on the weekends to stay healthy and happy
What’s the most important for you ? Having fun … or … becoming some ideal that’s living in your ( or your parents ) emagination … or … finding out the truth about yourself - or … or … or… ask yoursef - u are the only one that can find out.
Do you need an authorety to tell you wat to do with your life … or … do you want to find out yourself ?
