Hi Bowagahija,
I think there are simpler audio methods and hands-on machines to make ambient stuff, like anything from an electric guitar with a looper and delays, to a hardware 4-track machine, overdubbing.
All that said, a Digitakt (or other Elektron device) will provide eons of “rabbit hole” experimenting and options.
Take a look at this YouTube vid. I tried it on my DT and its awesome.

Wow, here I am another year and a half after your comment, and I’m still at it too. Two years of DT now, I’m finally getting the hang of it and it’s made me think differently about composing. I even got into hardware jams again. It’s so fun compared to working in the DAW. Hope you’re getting along well! Happy to share anything I’ve learned if it helps. Cheers.
