DX7 preset Bass 1 on MnM

I spent a lot of time watching MTV as a kid in the 80’s, fascinated by the music and videos. Started playing music later on but then bass and guitar. Only in recent years have I gotten into making and playing electronic music, right now I’m recording my bands debut album. We have kind of a Kraftwerk-ish thing going on, playing and tweaking our analog synths live (no sequencers) and the voice is made with talbox and vocoder, lyrics in Swedish. Anyway. Now to my question. I play a Minimoog Voyager but want to expand the sonic possibilities a bit and one thing I’ve realised that I aim for when tweaking my synths (also own a MnM) is the (in)famous DX7 factory preset “Bass 1”. Love it in A-ha’s Take On Me for example. So. Instead of bying a DX7, which I’m really keen on but it seems so unnecessary because I’m not at all interested in the other DX7 sounds, I thought I’d have the MnM work a little.

Do any of you care to point me in the direction of making a similar sound on the MnM? There’s room for me to use all six tracks since I’ll only use it for this sound when playing.

Can you post the algorithm and parameter settings for the preset in which you are interested?

I’ll try but I have no clue even of where to start looking for that.

If you can get a preset that will work in Native Instruments FM8, I’d be happy to screenshot out the parameters.
I don’t have a MM, otherwise I’d give it a try - I like a sound design challenge

EDIT> I’ve found this zip of 1000s of patches:

I’ll try and find it using FM8 and let you know.

I bet that exact preset is a preset on FM8 as well. It’s a classic. I’ll look into it!

I’ll see if I can dial something up when I get home, but the 2 or 3 OP FM on the Mono is pretty stripped down compared to the 6 OP DX7. Might still be possible to get close tho.

Personally, I’d just get a TX7 and sequence it from the Mono :joy:

Pretty easy to get any fm bass sound out of the mono
Certainly a strength of the monomachine

I was able to get a reasonably decent Solid Bass/Lately Bass from the Mono for my Mono Rocks It OldSchool video. It’s been a long time and I haven’t been able to find the patch files in quite a while but Solid/Lately should be well within the Mono’s abilities.

you will get pretty close for sure, could even the digipro machine do it with sampled single cycle wavs? it may be tough to get that same plucky attack going on though…

Yes, actually I think I used Digipro for mine and I want to say it was one of the Organ wave files for some strange reason. So analogback is right, you don’t need to use FM to sound like FM, especially with the naturally super-bright sound of the Mono.

I agree with analogback that if you get a single-cycle wave from the early part of those bass notes from the Youtube video above, load it in the Digipro, and get a filter envelope going, you’d likely be reasonably close for very little effort. You can also get a few single-cycles and then crossfade them to get it even closer.

i bought a tx81z … easy but cost a little money (£150 , in vgc)

Damn, I paid $60 for mine. I guess that was like 9 years ago now, though.
