Elektron Overbridge 1.10 Review

Let’s all TAKE IT TO THE BRIDGE!!!

No.

It’s heeeeeeere !!!

This is going to be a fun week-end

Thank you Elektron <3

Can someone confirm that total recall is TOTAL recall?

Seriously, what in the actual fuck?

This was all working pretty ok with Ableton before the update using overhub. Well, now the AK only syncs to the DAW if I don’t use overhub (regardless if anything else is even plugged in). Which means I can’t have my Motu, AK and AR being used at the same time.

Really getting tired of this not working how it has long been promised, and mad at myself for being a sucker.

Are you connecting it to your Mac using a usb3 cable? If so, try using a usb2 cable instead - this sorted out most of my issues with overhub. Now have a relatively stable configuration with both A4 and AR running through OH - apparently some fairly recent Mac chipsets don’t play nice with overhub when it’s connected as a usb3 device - mine’s a MBP 10.11.2.

Thanks for your reply. I’m using the supplied cables that come with the units themselves as well as the mildly unusual micro USB that comes with overhub. The overhub micro says USB 3.0, the red and black AK cable does not indicate 2 or 3. Like I said, it works with the red and black cable. I don’t have a spare micro cable laying around that also happens to be USB 2.0 (do most people?). I’m a bit skeptical at this point of going out to buy one (wouldn’t even know where to find one where I live). Seems a bit shit I spent a rather high price of $65 for a USB hub that doesn’t have the correct cable supplied to where I’d have to hunt one down in the hopes of it might work. Like I said it worked before the update. If Elektron supplied the incorrect cable, why can’t they correct things by sending people the correct one?

sorry to hear that! But normally Overhub comes with a USB2 and USB3 cable. If your`s had only the USB3 cable … write Elektron a message about that.

Weird. Yeah, mine definitely only came with one cable.

Are you sure it comes with both? On the product description vendor pages it only mentions one cable.

They really need to change the description on those pages as well with lines like:

[ul]
[justify][li]Supports USB 3.0[/li]

[li]Specifically made for Overbridge enabled units[/li]

[li]Fully compatible with all USB peripherals[/li]

Yeah, pretty disappointed with this - main reason for spending the €65 on Overhub was so that I could be guaranteed that everything would work smoothly. Instead, I spent hours on Friday night trying to figure it out, before I found this thread, which explained things.

Apparently only later Overhubs came with both - I only bought mine in December. Although, in any case I have at least a dozen mini usb cables around the house from various devices I’ve bought over the years.

To be honest, my other €10 usb hub seems to perform as well as Overhub, if not better. I also strongly suspect that attaching a psu will improve Overhub performance - pretty shocking at that price that it didn’t come with one … like my €10 hub did.

The good news is that everything is now working reasonably well and is more or less stable, give or take the occasional hiccup.

I’m waiting another couple of days to file a support ticket on this, as I want to get a bit more clarity on what the issue is - Overhub worked fine streaming audio and sending midi over usb3 cable under the last Overbridge version, although I wasn’t using the OB plugin due to the El Cap issue.

One suggestion for all good people out there

Save, duplicate, create your kits on the hardware. Yesterday I made a bomb which used only the first kit. While trying everything out on the new OB I pressed the “clear” button. Well, because plugin and hardware are in sync I lost everything… what is left are some useless patterns…Hope to save someone a track or so

surely if you didn’t then save on the unit you could’ve reloaded ?!

regarding the overhub:
Elektron website says

In the box:
• Overhub Multiple Transaction Translator USB 3.0 Hub
• USB 2.0 A to Micro-B Connector Cable
• USB 3.0 A to Micro-B Connector Cable
• Four rubber feet
• User manual

and it´s exactly what I got. So I would suggest to send a message …

Well, it’s like Benway said. Apparently they only just started including the USB 2.0 cable for this issue. I also bought mine in December and it only had the 3.0 cable. I’ll try to pick one up today, but it would be nice if they’d PayPal me the $5 or whatever.

Why is anyone buying overhub? it’s a 7 port usb3 hub for $75USD, that’s neat but you can get one that works better for less. Like the HooToo 7 port usb 3 hub from amzon for $35

Presumed better compatibility.

It’s the Apple mentality. Some people don’t mind spending a little more for things to work smoothly out of the box the first time. Unfortunately Elektron has the premium price without the functionality.

Thankfully the U in USB stands for universal. “Better compatibility” implies some sort of proprietary communication protocol, aka not USB.

I don’t disagree. I, like many others however don’t know much about USB hubs (besides that I’ve been to three stores so far this morning and none of them have the USB to micro B cable).

Edit: Six stores in two and a half hours that I walked to. The last store had USB to micro B but only USB 3.0. I don’t live in a small city (11 months out of the year I’m in Mexico City). The only other place I can think of is downtown, but with traffic and chaos that’s a two hour plus trip easily all told. What a mess!

Ticket opened.

I still have to grasp fully how “Sync automatically on save” works. Quite possible errors on my side.

Also later on I realised that when you press “Save” in OB kit it always saves/overwrites the kit currently active on hardware. So I figure best option is to duplicate kits on hardware when you have something cool so you don’t mistakenly overwrite good stuff while walking around OB.
