The EPS was the first hardware sampler I got and it was the magic touch for a year or two. I have a rack EPS-m now and yes, magic magic magic.
Then I just started using to make this kind of shat.
Nice tune by the way. Like Jan Jelinek or something.
I told my GF that we have an onus to collect old samplers. At the moment we have Akai S700 and S612, and Ensoniq EPS, Mirage, and ASR. I hardly use them anymore but no PC can replicate the magic, limited though it can often be in definition and tweakability.
Cool track, like it! I’ve listened to your music before, quality stuff.
Thanks very much. I really like Jelineks stuff. Especially personal rock and loop-finding. I bought my EPS16+ after listening to his stuff actually. Got almost all of the waveboy disks for more craziness.
Seems like a good collection. I’m going to buy a s612 very soon I hope. Now seems like the time to collect these machines as the prices are still low.
PC’s are good for many things, but for making smudgy sounds these old samplers are much easier.
I often record stuff thru/on old samplers then manipulate them in my Octatrack or Ableton sampler.
The S612s are magic. My advice - get two and run mono into both or run them as stereo samplers with different effects on each.
I never knew a decay envelope could be so sweet. Also, one knob or slider for everything and no menus!
Loop finding was a big album for me. I printed it to reel to reel and listened to it that way. Even in listening to the video I linked above I find tones that excite me far more than the OT.
PS you do great stuff with the inbuilt sequencer! Far beyond my abilities…
Ahh so thats why I keep seeing stacked pairs everywhere
Got anything recorded with the s612? Checked your youtube, some really nice stuff over there.
Bet It sounds cool on reel to reel. Yes, the OT has no “sound” as far as I’m concerned whereas the Ensoniq really colours everything you put in it in a nice way.
Thanks. I used the track mute function and live parameter changes to mostly.
I do think the OT has a sound, but it’s so 2-d, even when it does have dynamics it still sounds so flat, like a wall of thin paint. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing! But I think it is due to a poor output summing stage. Once it is in my DAW I can craft the audio and it takes quite well to intense EQ, but I find I have to multi-track now to really get the most out of it.
Some people use the OT sound to fooking good effect though…
Never thought too much about sound quality. Would be interesting to hear some sort of comparison. And yes, Actress is brilliant! Ghettoville is probably my favorite album of his. Really bleak and minimal. Do you know for sure he’s a OT user? I’ve seen him use MnM and MD in some video, so I guess its plausible.
