GenMDM is a MIDI interface for the 16-bit Sega Genesis/Megadrive developed by little-scale (https://little-scale.blogspot.com/search?q=genmdm)

anyone out there making Sega music ? Here is an awesome Arduino project that gives the GenMDM polyphony control in-between the sega and a midi keybaord or DAW. really trying to build this for more sega control with my Octatrack!

I don’t do this or know anyone who does but I love the sound of the Genesis, so please post updates if you successfully integrate with the Octa!

Whoa, good stuff; especially like Nostalgic Ash! The Genesis/Megadrive is all FM right? How many ops/voices are available?

4 operators and 6 FM voice channels also 3 PSG pulse wave square wave channels and one noise channel for a total of 10 channels of synthesis. And the 6th FM channel can do DAC over ride for drums !

I got that new catskull electronics GenMDM on its way in the mail ! So going to bring some heat! :fire::fire::fire: I ran the sega audio into my Erica synths acid box III filter to give it a sidechain synced with the OT Bpm gives it a good pump feeling and let’s the kick breath thru the mix !

I’m thinking of getting one of these! How are patches stored/selected?

I think they aren’t on the device itself. Though I believe Catskull (with my good friend Jamatar) is also working on a device that can store and recall patches and also do cool things like poly chaining etc.

Well there is a Midi CC for saving presets to the ram but sometimes it doesn’t work , but if your using this device with ableton it’s super easy to save patches but it’s saves with your settings in a FM channel strip the max for live device. This m4l device also lets you load Sega .TFI files which are FM presets from all the sega games and some guy in japan made a folder of almost all the games it’s literally thousands of presets to go thru. My favorite patches are from the 3 streets of rage games !

Yeah I’m super excited for this device I was maybe going to build my own but I don’t know too much about Arduino ! I know his current Genajam arduino does the polyphony and has a SD card for loading and the .TFI files ! Super excited about poly chaining , would love to hear what you could make with a GenMDM my dude !

Haha, I have too much gear already! I love what Jam’s been doing with it though.

Once upon a time I made some IDM with a Mega Drive…

It’s a funny chip - or rather how Sega kept messing it up on the board, haha. The MD/Genesis revisions sounds so vastly different each with their own issues. I had to test three different units until I found one that was actually usable. Even at that I think I phased out the quantization noise - it was just too much.

These are beautiful tracks @Ess I can tell you put some hard work into these because I know the frustrations of the genmdm. I can hear your unique sound design in these tracks, very good show ! Also the other release on that bandcamp was stellar ! I’ll be listening to these all week drawing inspiration for my own Sega IDM :alien::upside_down_face: Currently I’m running my model 1 into the Digitone audio in! My idea is to have concrete bass driven modulations on with the sega and dope IDM pads with the digitone ! Tho you can make very similar sega bass and modulation on the DN so maybe no one will be able to tell what I used for what in the end result. :sunglasses:

Hey, anyone selling a GenMDM? If so, give me a shout / OM / holler!
