Help with creating a sound from Demdike Stare's Eulogy track

HI,

Can someone help me with how to create the sound at the start of this track from Demdike Stare please ?

I’m pretty sure it’s quite a simple sound, square wave maybe from a Roland SH-101 or Juno 106 maybe. But for some reason how to create it seems to be beyond me at the moment

It’s a common sound too that I’ve heard in countless tracks…

Thank you

It sounds like something an SH-101 could produce. I’m sure you could also create it on various other synths but if you got an SH-101 or clone that would be ideal. It’s a baseline king!

Recreating it shouldn’t be too difficult, like you said a square wave, some filtering, eg for a more plucky sound. Maybe layered with a triangle for some extra timbre and some lfo’s on the filter and maybe filter amp for movement.

I usually assume sounds that hollow need FM. But I have a 106 so I’m gonna try to make it later on.

Yeah this sounds like FM to me as well.

I tried with the 106 and the Syntakt’s SY Tone (an FM synth). I got much closer with the SY Tone. This reinforces the “it’s FM” idea. Too tired to make and share recordings now.

It sounds a lot like that “log bass” tone the amapiano people talk about - which is a DX7 patch.

Ya I’m in camp FM bass on this one. There’s a similar patch on my TX802 I kept using on everything for a while.

Also, just gotta say these guys are such masters of the craft.

Here’s a recording.

The Syntakt plays the Juno 106 and mixes in its sound. You’ll hear me alternate two bass tones. The more hollow one comes from the SY Tone and the buzzier one comes from the Juno. I tried to match them. The Syntakt mod envelope goes faster, which helps, but also the oscillator tone has more tubular character. Admittedly, for the Juno sound I layered the square (with pulse width moved a little off neutral) and sub (another square) so it’s gonna be a buzzier, but I think this reinforces how it’s easier to get the desired tone from an FM synth.

Thank you all for your help.

I was originally trying to reproduce it on the Nord Modular G1, but following some of the replies on this thread I went and dug my SH 101 out. I can get close but not quite so I guess the next try is an FM based sound.

I do have a Model:Cycles and I hadn’t thought of trying the Tone machine on that, so I’ll give it a go.

Thank you again for the help.
