How do you create a decent ride sound?

Hi Folks,

I’ve sorta got close but not quite been able to nail a convincing ride patch, can anyone please give me some tips?

Ta.

Are you using p-locks and parameter slides?

a lot of reverb

modulate the release a bit

modulate the velocity and volume and reverb amount

play it unquantized

You can get this coming from any base patch thats a regular close hi hat in my opinion. Raise the release and use an ASDR shape that is exponential hit and then fast down.

Thanks for the suggestions.

To my ears my main problem is that the initial ‘hit’ of the cymbol still sorta sounds like a bleep. Yes, I’ve cut the sustain and release time etc.

Hmm…

Tbh, I always use a sample (or several samples) for a ride cymbal.

Are you limited to the A4?

use this to get closer. how far does a4 go beyond the audible spectrum?

Yep but it’s done with FM as it’s so easy and better approach to go METAL with FM
Analog Four give not FM machine…

Maybe you can try with the multiplier of the LFO to get something Crazy…
And maybe check if in Druma there’s not something could help to reverse engineering something close to a ride cymbal.

Anyway i prefer to go to Acoustic Jazz Cymbal with mallets or brushes with my FXpansion BFD3. As i not like synthesis in some sounds… I know in House Techno all is from TR, but i don’t like so much some particular sounds… I prefer to go to acoustic and tools is also important (Brushes, mallets etc…) and then modernize with some FX chain after.

I also go with real playing with roland SPX and HPD Handsonic, and take as many groove and feeling as a real benefit in a track where you need to put life in it… rather to something too static and right on each steps.

Thanks for the suggestions, it might be a futile exercise, but I’m trying to do everything in the AK.

When I first got my DX7 I spent way too long trying to get decent lush strings out of it. I think we all need to go through the futility stage.

Heh well I am a pragmatist and far too lazy to stick at it for long. Actually what I have got so far isnt far off, it aint bad. But hell, who needs traitional sounds anyway, this thing does all sorts a crazy.
