Is the A4 capable of matching a Rev 2 / peak's sonic capabilities

It’s one of the USPs of the A4 - really useful and so powerful. I must remember to never set up the macros during soundcheck in almost pitch darkness again though.

I let go of my A4 mk1 about a year ago to (partly) fund a 2nd hand Perfourmer and a Prophet 12 I got in a sudden flurry of GAS (for a good price, ofc). And I’ve been thinking of getting another A4 for at least the past six months. I also think I’d ”appreciate it more now” and ”understand it better” (isn’t it always like that?).

But when I really start to think about having the A4 as something to play on the side, as a ”nice little analog groovebox”, I realize that it wouldn’t work like that for me. It would just demand a helluva lot more effort and attention than that, especially when I’m not a big fan of sound locks (which are essential for getting any decent mileage out of an A4).

I still think another mk1 may be in the cards for me at some point in time (2023).

I hear ya. At one point I had the Ot, dt and DN. A wonderful trio, but I found that having 3 Elektron sequencers was too much. I would not go in nearly as deep as I could. Im probably better off postponing the eventual A4.

You do make a valid point tho. A rev 2 is very immediate. U can load up a sound and you’re away and if I’m seeing these comments the A4 requires a bit more attention.

The A4 I saw second hand (black) would look so sexy next to my black rytm tho

That’s called GAS. And because they look so nice I also will keep my DN, DT and AR – in the near future they will look like father and son, mother and daughter sitting next to each other on my new table. And then … they will produce all the nice tunes I always wanted! Hopefully!

Just wanted to say: I can relate!

Yeah i’m the first to admit that this is GAS lol!
But besides the negatives about GAS I do like it. Me and my roommate are in the same boat and discussing the arguments we come up with to justify trades is part of the fun, as is researching.

Im gonna get the A4
Ive went through a lot of music stuff and each one teaches me new things. Im keeping everything for at least 3 months or so and then decide if I keep it. The AR and Digitakt are keepers (still dislike the overlap but cant sell them, so focused on making it work). with the A4 im fully Elektron. VSTS can fill the poly gap; i dont mind.

I’ve owned the Rev2 for a long time and recently sold it. Used some of the cash to get a a4 mk1. 2nd time owning one.

I’m a huge fan of the Rev2, love it’s sound despite some of the controversy surrounding it’s filters etc. I think it’s largely misunderstood. Anyway. That said I don’t think the A4 can really reproduce the sound of the Rev2 in both tone/timbre and modulation options. That reverse is also true. There are synth sounds you just can shake out of the Rev2. Think liquidy leads, smudgy bass sounds, moog/ roland type sounds that you can get close with the a4 can’t be done on the Rev2. Rev2 has its own character and that character is strong.

You’ll be happy with the a4. It has some tricks up it’s sleeve especially with poly mode and layering. Kinda reminds me of my old mono/poly but with modern features and it’s got its own thing with the two different filters and eg shapes.
