Id be interested if anyone here had made a track with just samples imported from outside. To get an idea of the overall sound.Id like to listen to some, cheers M
I posted this earlier. All samples except for a kick and some hats layered with samples.
Uses the filter and comp a bit - samples are hit or miss on the AR, like the SP1200 IMO.
how so?
Because the sample conversion and playback accentuates certain frequencies or pulses, I guess.
I have not noticed anything like that, not yet anyways. I’ve been feeding my AR all kinds of bit depths and kHz.
Going from stereo to mono is of course, as always, something that can mess things up. Stuff like wide snares or cymbals loose quite a lot of their character going to mono. But that’s another story…
Here’s a remake of the classic 1983 Run DMC song:
http://www.mediafire.com/download/tra57cs4eic1rg0/KrushGroove1_AnalogRytmRemake.flac
It uses (unmodified) Oberheim DMX samples from http://www.electrongate.com/dmxfiles/eproms.html
I used the 1991 “together forever” version for reference.
No external FX, pre- or postprocessing was used. I only removed a tiny bit of bass using my (analog) mixer.
This is my first AR song (using the internal AR sequencer).
Some things I noticed:
-
Samples on the hihat tracks always have randomized sample starts
(found that out when I used the ‘CH 9’ track for longer samples that play when the beat stops, had
to move them to ‘LT 6’ to fix that) -
The clap sample (on the ‘CP 4’ track) has random clicks in it (also due to samplestart randomization?!)
-
The song editor has an annoying bug that shows you the pattern selection countdown dialog for several seconds
when the pattern has already been selected (and the keys were released) -
When you leave the song editor (disable song, press ‘no’ to get back to pattern mode), changing patterns
still alters the song (bug!) -
Sometimes starting song replay starts playing a different pattern (last edited one) first before switching to the active song pattern
-
This track may not sound like the original, but it sounds far better than my first naive approach using a PC tracker
My AR has firmware 1.02c, btw.
tkx for pointing out song mode problems.
- Samples on the hihat tracks always have randomized sample starts
(found that out when I used the ‘CH 9’ track for longer samples that play
? I dont think this is true.
btw samples:
I noticed the bitrate fx sounds very different on my uploaded samples. getting a strange noise hiss too.
will experiment with uploading other wav formats.
hey amiga303,
I’m not trying to bst you. The ‘CH 9’ track random sample offset issue is real, I learnt that the hard way.
Maybe it’s a feature – random sample starts can be cool – but I’d rather have control over that myself.
The ‘clap’ click/glitch artefacts sound like a bug, though.
p.s.:
I could not reproduce issue 3) (pattern selection UI bug in song mode).
Apparently a reboot of the AR "fixed" it!
- When you leave the song editor (disable song, press ‘no’ to get back to pattern mode), changing patterns
still alters the song (bug!)
Same problem on the Analog Four
I have not experienced “random sample start” on any track.
I always double up the hats with my own shaker / noise samples, I would have noticed this kind of behavior.
Care to explain how you have deducted that this is indeed happening ?
I have created a support ticket (#5958) for this a few days ago (no response, yet).
Here’s a 7zip with some audio recordings (with + without bug), the samples used, and a textfile that describes the issue (and how to reproduce it):
http://www.mediafire.com/download/lf0adeio3lzt1t8/ar_sample_start_bug-23Jul2014.7z
I’m convinced that this is a bug, not a feature.
It probably has something to do with improperly reset internal sampler engine states, and it might be related to the “clicking samples” issue (ticket #5959).
Cool, I’ll take a look in a few ! Very intrigued by this.
