Korg SQ-64 Poly Sequencer

Online stores return policies make up for that. I fact I find it even better than a brick-and-mortar store since I can test gear in context.

I respectfully disagree, by virtue of the fact that I disapprove of the carbon footprint of online shopping, the hassle of returning products when necessary, the facelessness of online businesses in general, and the often brazen abuse of what I see as overly-generous return policies.

But that’s just me.

Cheers!

Disagree with what ? It’s not a choice anyway, bricks-and-mortar stores have nothing of interest for me, at least where I live. Sure, I can go there and test drum sticks, guitar picks and clavinovas… great.

I’m noticing an issue with newly purchased korg SQ64.
Screen seems fine, up until you crank brightness in settings to 9 or 10.
Then, certain pages will flicker. For example, in Global… the screen isn’t flickering. But then you go to MIDI TX TRANSPORT (Track B - Step 10) and the screen starts flickering.
It’s only with Brightness up to 9 or 10… and even then, only on certain pages(?).
Just wondering if anyone else has one and getting similar results ???

Coupled with a desire to keep the second hand value reasonable so they can get rid if they really don’t like it.

Given there’s been much feedback, and even two reviews, on the subject of how you can’t tell which steps are active easily because of lack of led contrast between on and off steps … how long do we think we might have to wait for for a firmware update to address this ?

This is looking like the only hardware sequencer that gets close to meeting my needs, so I hope it’s not long.

When you want to get one, consider that this might never get fixed. Don’t make your purchase decision depending on future maybe‘s that possibly could never happen.

I’m thinking about the possibilities using this with midi enabled fx pedals. It’s small enough that it could fit on a larger pedalboard.

Anyone with one able to tell me if on the melody tracks you can live record one long note with shorter ones overlapping it?

(The thing you can’t record on Octatrack)

I remember now that one of the reviews showed the notes in chords can start at different points.

So I guess what I need to know is - can overlapping notes end separately too?

I like to play left hand long notes / right hand short notes and so far haven’t found a step sequencer to capture that - only linear and piano roll sequencers…

yes

BUT

it’s not quite that simple

i was curious, just arrived today and i was looking for reports of flickering OLED (one above as it happens)

you very much can record on one track a couple of notes which start stop as follows

_ _ _ _ e e e e _ _ _ _
_ _ c c c c c c c c __

if you catch my drift - just two sustaining notes played in one pass which do not share lengths or start or end times

and if the pattern is longish and the step length is short relative to teh phrase it will sound close

if the step length is long relative to the pattern (i.e. slowed down to permit multiple events within a step) it can sound funky or truncated on some releases compared to what you played - it’s hard to put my finger on it - but teh algorithm is making choices about whether that last sustain phase is in or out

so it’s far from like it is in a linear system - but it’s actually quite natural at catching timing

the issue is that it’s a complete torture to fix timing - no quantize and no easy step delete

it’s a fantastic piece of hardware - i wanted it to be what i imagined for mono synth stuff - but it’s not as good as Elektron’s in that regard - it doesn’t overdub as well - in fact with the non-mono mode you can successively build up layers, it’s quite flexible and there are nice consequences for some of its features - but teh bread and butter stuff is not polished of flexible enough for spontaneity imho - it’s creative, but hampered - i’m torn as i really wanted it to be a hands on cv tool with lots of tricks, but it’s only an hour in action and teh screen is flickering - it doesn’t do it when the brightness is reduced, but it was working fine with the brightness it had until it went glitchy

gutted as it was a bargain - the screen needs to be close to brightest to be comfy

step recoding is tedious and there’s no way to edit down a chord - teh thing is lovely and well made but has a few UX foibles, but also some nice touches

i was banking on some of teh shortcomings being updated, but i’ll have to talk to dealer about this identical screen issue - i can’t work with the screen displaying stuff like this - primarily in a few menus as mentioned up thread - and not occuring when running at lower brightness or off low power usb

Thanks for detailed report @avantronica !

Really digging it now fwiw, incredibly powerful and when you focus on how you can do stuff that you otherwise couldn’t you see the potential rather than lamenting how it’s not what you have/know. A different way to work can be all you need. Need to get the odd screen behaviour sorted out though

Guys tell me pls
SQ-64 can start other synths (with built-in sequencer) in chain at the same time?
or i can only do it manually? I can not always do it correctly and exactly(

i’d be amazed if it doesn’t send start/stop/clock - but i don’t recall settings for tinkering with those if you didn’t want it sent - but can’t test as the one i had is going back to Korg and i’m awaiting a new one with a healthy screen/board

Can anyone here confirm or deny this comment seen elsewhere. Particularly interested if this has changed with any recent firmware update.

What is bugging me the most right now is that you can not record to the Drum-Track. Not via an external midi-device but also not on the SQ64 itself. It seems absurd that they wouldn’t add a virtual Drumpad for track D, when it has a virtual piano for the other tracks.
I can set steps in the sequencer but most of the time I would want to play my drums :frowning:

Seems like a silly omission on Korg’s part to me, but where I read it, it seemed to have been confirmed. (But I trust you guys more  )
