Latency Expectation with direct Monitoring

Hay Everyone,

Sooo i just discovered that there‘s a difference in latency when recording into a DAW vs directly monitoring over DAW (e.g. sending instrument into interface -> adding fx etc over daw -> outputing that signal to monitors).
In my case, i would like to send my instruments into my DAW and monitor them over the DAW. I would like to achieve this to be able to process incoming instruments through the DAW in real time.
However, since I know that recording latency can get down to almost zero, with a proper interface, i wondered what latency i can expect, when directly monitoring over my DAW and if someone else has an experience working this way?
In my case i use ableton live 11 with a 2017 Macbook pro with dual core extra fast processor.

Thank you for your advice!

I would just monitor directly when recording and add FX after the fact. Trying to setup FX chains to process incoming audio while simultaneously playing is a no-go in terms of feeling natural. There will always be a bit of latency going through a computer and back out to your ears.

If you can monitor through your interface and turn ableton monitoring off that is a good way.

Or you can make 2 duplicate tracks in ableton, monitor with one, record with the other.
