Well I’ve really tried to make the OT work for my live setup but I fear I’m going to have to revert to using a laptop.
I nearly got there but there is one limitation that I can’t find a workaround for. Triggering slices from a midi keyboard.
I’ve got one shot trigs taking care of my backing track, I even mastered using Parts and the arranger to send multiple midi program changes within a song. And I’ve got my click coming out of the headphone output to send to my drummer.
BUT the one simple thing that I can’t do is trigger samples from a keyboard. And I seriously can’t use the plastic keys on the Octa. Too many accidental multiple triggers.
Such a shame as I got so close! (and it took a f&$k load of head scratching and trial and error). I was so looking forward to ditching the laptop on stage.
…no chance on this one, i’m afraid…8 tracks…8 slots…8 triggers…and a standard midi mapping that is needed elsewhere…no update will ever be able fix this…it’s an midi protocol issue…
BUT…the ot is THE ONLY live box, let’s avoiding a computer on stage, still and anyway…
just wrap ur head around your issue one last time…
and separate clearly, which sample slots could be triggered by ot’s knobs on the fly…
and for the rest, get a used mpc 500 or something to add the leftovers you can’t drop in that way…
ot’s direct sample trigger options while running, scared me in live situations in first place, too…but after practising a while with it, and that’s what it’s all about with the ot, i even took lot’s of advantage out of it…
the 8 slots are not much of a headroom anyway and would lead u to scratch your head very soon again…so investing another 200 bucks and add an additional little sampler solution on top of your live concept, is the way to go…instead of reading emails on stage again…
which is the case, no matter what controler would tease that laptop…
so the one more little hardware add on - solution is the way to go, i guess…
and would last for the rest of your live performance days with the full satisfaction you get out of the feel, to really perform with music INSTRUMENTS for real…
I ended up getting a korg e2s sampler to go with the OT. The unit gets a lot of flack for its shortcomings, but paired with the OT it works great for me.
I loaded it with my favorite drum sounds, synth shots, and single cycle synths.
The E2s has scale mode and can do chords too! Saves me tons of time on sample chain prepping a chord part for the OT.
270 seconds max sampling, but you can store many different versions of a fully loaded sample set to the SD card.
Loads slower than the OT, but not too bad.
Basically though, an mpc 500/1000 or one of the boss samplers or the E2s or even an ipad could be your ‘one shot’ sample machine while the OT is free to work it’s magic
