Make Noise 0-coast

*Sorry new here (registered in anticipation of my Digitakt arrival in coming days).

I recently got into modular and 0-Coast was my gateway as much as guitar pedals were my gateway into 0-Coast.

I can see it not being for everyone but just in case you are looking for inspiration, Make Noise on Instagram always has something new up, usually involving the desktops. I honestly did not care for Instagram before seeing all the new patches but I often end up screen recording their videos to help recreate patches on my other gear.

Welcome to the forum! There are some great videos on the official Make Noise YouTube channel from Walker (Make Noise guy) too, covering loads of patching ideas for 0-Coast, Strega, and 0-Ctrl. I think Iā€™ve watched them all now. Their social media is great for ideas.

His videos are every bit entertaining as they are educational and inspiringā€¦ Iā€™m trying not to sound like Iā€™m fanning hard over here, but it still comes out that way. Oh well.
I sent in my take on the animation a couple of weeks ago and Iā€™m still hoping my noises will pop up in one of those videos, but they must have tons of entries.

Microvolt is a beast - very underrated semi modular/ i bought one of the last unit ever made in March 21

Super reccomended

Sharing my love for the 0-Coast !

yes! this exactly.

I went even further and had an awesome time with the 0-coast against the M8 tracker (even more so microprogramming than the A4).

but the A4 is actually better in having CV outs to more deeply poke at the 0-coast. sometime I have to get all three togetherā€¦

With Eurorack I think itā€™s very unlikely to damage modules by patching incorrectly. Itā€™s usually advised to avoid patching output to output but virtually all modules have protections against that so in practice itā€™s not a worry.
The one really bad thing to avoid is plugging in the power connector of the module itself the wrong way to the busboard.

does anyone have the 0-coast and the DPO/STO?

I just wonder if the 0-coast sounds more like the DPO or more like the STO?

It does not sound like the DPO, that I can assure you. At least the wavefolder doesnā€™t.

I needed the DPO but didnt want to go into modular (now I have the DPO and 168HP :man_shrugging:). I tried hard with the OCoast at the shop to get there but it wasnā€™t doing it. Personally I donā€™t like the sound of the 0Coast, but thatā€™s entirely me.

Got myself the 0-control & 0-coast last week. Very happy with this combination. As i have the DFAM as well, i was wondering if anybody got some tips paring/patching these together.

Nice! Relative beginner here, but Iā€™ve got a DFAM and recently acquired 0-Coast, and mixing the oscillators, a neat polyrhythm patch up-thread (mixing 0C clock and slope, out to slope trigger and gate, in this case DFAMā€™s Adv Clock), and Iā€™ve been patching the DFAM sequencer into the 0C, but those possibilities will be different with an 0ctrl.

I havenā€™t truly dug into it yet, though, and will be keeping an eye if others have tips for these together. Pretty mind-bending so far though, plus simple leads and basses on it sound great.

Itā€™s a great partner with the OP-Z. Sequence it, and then run the 0-Coast back through the OP-Zā€™s reverb and delay.

I see people here pair 0-coast with Moogā€™s DFAM often. However, I know that 0-coastā€™s most CV outputs, for example, slope and contour reach upto 9V ā€“ I measured this with my oscilloscope. However, DFAMā€™s most CV inputs are for -5V to +5V.

As I understand it, this could fry DFAMā€™s circuit if without any voltage conversion. I have seen some people whoā€™ve fried their semi-modular synths in this way.

Wouldnā€™t that be a concern?

Iā€™d been wondering this too, and had been exploring the two together cautiously, and made myself a list based on the manuals, below.

DFAMs and 0-Coastā€™s oscillators are both -5 to 5v, and their envelopes are generally 0 to 8v.

DFAM:

Inputs that Accept 8v

Trigger
VCA CV (10v and 8v),
Noise Level (8v)
1-2FM amt,
Run Stop,
Adv Clock.

Ext Audio accepts 10 vpp, see below

DFAM 8v Out 8: VCA EG out, VCO EG out, VCF EG
Pitch output -5 to 5,
Velocity 0 to 5

0-Coast Voltage

0 -8 for gate
Random is 0-10 or -10
Oscillators are -5 to 5v
Slope, Contour 0-8v
LFO from MIDI 2 gate?
Dynamics Out?

DFAM Ext Audio accepts 10 vpp, which in my limited understanding is okay to take Dynamics out (0-8 I believe but couldnā€™t find in manual), and Iā€™ve seen Loopop do it.

In what Iā€™ve read, the ā€œfry your kitā€ scenario is either multing into a circuit rather than out of one (trying to ā€œmixā€ without a mixer), or in some cases connecting outputs to other outputs (?).

Iā€™d welcome corrections or further guidance from any more experienced usersā€¦

Is it OK to send a 10v gate signal to the gate inputs of the 0coast?

Itā€™s probably best to email Make Noise at technical@makenoisemusic.com to be absolutely sure. They usually respond very quickly.

Sold mine, it was interesting but ultimately gimmicky and not really that different from any other monosynth sonically. Could have kept it as a curiosity if I didnā€™t have better use for the money (Analog Rytm).

:face_with_raised_eyebrow:

It can do very nice bass as well as distinct melodic lines, the character added by the harmonics makes the sound rather unique in my book!

Moreover, paired with the Strega (or a modular system) it has a lot to offer other than a West Coast oscillator.
ā€œGimmickyā€ is certainly not the way I would qualify it.

Sure, it can, but then again doing very nice bass is a bit of a requirement for monosynths, at least for me. Distinct melodic lines? Yeah, many others can do that as well. I just donā€™t think itā€™s that special considering how unique the structure is.

I think anyone can recognize the distinctive 0-Coast sonic signature when itā€™s not patched to create noise Ć  la @Stazma

It can be used as a mini-modular on its own, this structure makes it convenient to learn how to patch a modular, itā€™s very pedagogical IMO.
And the number of utilities makes it very interesting in a context where there is other gear to patch with.

But I can understand that someone doesnā€™t like the sound. Even with FM itā€™s rather hard to escape to these tones.

With a few FX on top of it you can get away a bit, though.
Any nice distorsion, maybe with an analog filter, and some delay or reverb works pretty well.
I like to pair get its sound back in A4 or Strega, these days.
