I thought about this as well. A lot of people make that comparison, but I think they are really different. M:S is a sample player and has no built in sounds. The MC-101 has. Other then that its the sequencer of the M:S that stands out. The MC has 16 drumsounds on one track and 16 samples on another track, the M:S only has 6 sampleslots and is there already sample locking with the M:S? Then there is no big deal that the M:S only have 6 tracks.
So I think they are different. I think they are both more suitable in a live situation. But I can see the M:S doing more studio time that the MC101.
Model:Samples got sample locks with a firmware update.
Edit
I donāt have the M:S, but the amp envelope is quite limited with adjustable decay only.
You can use the lfo, but AFAIK thereās only one lfo per track so M:S seems more suited for drums/percussion.
I donāt know much about the MC101 structure and synthesis and Roland still hasnāt uploaded the reference manual for the MC101, but it seems to me people compare M:S and MC101 mostly because both are portable (well Elektron didnāt release the battery pack thingie, yet or did they?) and in the same price range.
One big let down (afaik) is that the mc-101 doesnāt seem to have inputs. If they had made this a looper for external gear as well, I would have been tempted.
Iām so tired of companies, especially Roland intentionally limiting functionality in order to sell another bigger box. If the707 can sample external, why couldnāt the 101. Smh Roland
just 3 words: will buy 707.
i studied specs & features of all modern grooveboxes when migrated to hardware setup, and finally 707 is the only one that has everything i need (and for moderate price).
it really appears to be a properly designed do-it-all live machine.
what i like most about this box is the proper set of outputs.
a single stereo pair of audio output and a single MIDI out port that we can commonly see in other grooveboxes is definitely not sufficient, and iām happy that Roland engineers understand this.
iām especially excited about properly implemented send/return sockets.
Not sure you could use it for a long live set due to the current sample length limit unfortunately.
If it had a drive like the OT that would have been sweet.
i use samples mainly for drum/percussion sounds, and do not use looper at all, so should not be a problem in my particular case.
AFAIK, 707 has 64 MB of sampling memory ā same as Blofeld with SL license. itās sufficient for me.
I wonder if the 101 wouldnāt pair quite nicely with my Blackbox, on second thought. The more I bring my Blackbox around, the more I miss an equally immediate instrument for creating chords, bass lines, leads and stuff that go into the Blackbox.
So I wouldnāt use this for complete tracks, but for knocking out ideas that Iād record into the Blackbox.
it seems to be possible to sample thru usb i think
If so, itās something but still limited to newer gear.
The 101 seems needlessly limited. Youāre telling me you canāt add sampling on the smaller box? Why exactly is the memory limited if youāre using an SD? Would not upgrade from the Circuit.
No user presets on these, right? Or did I over look them:
So it confirms the MC-101 can sample/loop from PC.
The interface seems not so great for sound design from scrath though, I hope thereās a sound editor for pc along the way.
the mc-101 is pretty packed with fx and featuresā¦
It does resampling of tracks, mix and thru USB
only thing i m curious a bout if i m using it as a 4 channel looperstationā¦ what the loading time would be for a maxed out project (6min audio)
Looks like I will sell Digitakt)))
BUT the price is a little bit high for the big machine
Anyone know if itās possible to import a clip from other projects while the sequencer is running ? It would make up for the 16 scenes limit.
Not possible. You can load clips from other projects but only with playback stoppedā¦
Ah ! Deal-breaker for meā¦ I hope theyāll raise the number of scenes then.
Anyone know if itās possible to save a recorded loop as a .wav file?
Had a go at these today. A few takeaways:
Workflowās awkward.
But they sound GREAT.
And while the big one is cool as is, the little one is quite the marvel.
