MC 707 / 101 : New Roland Grooveboxes

:smiley:

And itā€™s great fun, whenever something new is released. Checking the videos, reading the reviews, joining the banter, to just explore.

How do I save a preset Ivā€™e created on the MC-707 ? Any way to do this or is it just saved with the project?

Thanks

Except when limitations are in the most frustrating places x)

I donā€™t feel cheated buying the 707. I think the issues I see relate to what kind of tool you need in your arsenal, and what kind of tool the company is selling.

The TR8s, does what it does quite well - you can load samples, and itā€™s clear that itā€™s a drum machine, not mean to load loops, so Iā€™m not worried about some of the restrictions there.

The 707 is a performance based arranger, so the sampling element should be based on allowing you to load a lot of loops. Itā€™s not the same thing as the TR8s, and in fact for programming drums, I like it much better. But they didnā€™t hit the mark if they were trying to make something that could emulate/replace ableton in a live setting - which is clearly what they were going for.

Hi, do you know if this also applies to the mc-101 ?
ā€œEach track can either be a drum, tone (VA synth) or Looper (advanced sample live record & playback) trackā€

Picked up an MC-101. Liking it so far, although itā€™s not quite clicking with me. Good sounds, though, and relatively easy to use.

One stupid question for the masses ā€” deleting a note in the step sequencer? Not changing its pitch or duration. Iā€™ve got that down. But just plain removing a note ā€” overwriting it with silence or a rest? How would one do that?

press SHIFT + PROJECT while holding down the note you want to erase. Sorry cant remember right now if you need to have rec enabled for this to work, not at my 101 right jow

yes, applies also to the 101.

you can only save the projects. But there is nothing stopping you from making ā€œsoundpack projectsā€ which only have 128 patches for tones, for example.

Everything on the 707/101 revolves around using data from other projects, and it is actually more flexible in this regard than most other grooveboxes Iā€™ve used.

should be the standard.
Iā€™m looking at you Elektron! :wink:

Yes, itā€™s a fantastic idea. Thatā€™s why I was confused when it didnā€™t work:

Some odd bug obviously because I can import other clips/samples just fineā€¦ but still, this flexibility has yet to be battle-tested.

just reported on GS and repeating here:

i tested whether 707 records CC messages from MIDI In.
it does not. even CC 80, 81, 82 that are recordable from Filter / Mod / FX knobs.
at the same time, 707 record notes from MIDI In as expected and reacts to incoming CC messages as expected.

so, i found utter excuse for pairing 707 with Pyramid :grin:

Some further musings about the MC101 after another week of play.

The bad :

-Encountered some bugs when loading samples and switching between clips or projects. Some presets also got corrupted, introducing some cpu-noise in the signal path. Hopefully, an update can come out soon to address these and other bugs reported by operators. Until then, saving projects regularly is highly recommended;
-FXs sends are sometime hard to figure out, especially on drum tracks;
-Memory for looper tracks seems to be limited to 60 seconds ā€œper projectā€ (can someone else confirm this ?). Memory for tones/drums appears to be according specifications (i.e. : up to 11 minutes, mono);
-I couldnā€™t find a way to monitor how much memory is left. Is there one ?

The good :

-Moving between clips when tracks are in ā€œclip modeā€ is relatively seamless (a big deal for me);
-Assignment of parameters to control knobs is saved in clips/tracks;
-Filter MFXs are very good;
-Sounds big and clean on a decent PA system;
-Surprising long operation time on batteries, I got up to 3-4 hours using old rechargeable AA batteries. This guy is coming with me for camping next yearā€¦

Thanks!! Thatā€™s just what I was missing.

And third crash/bug/whatever involving audio in 3 weeksā€¦ all of a sudden the sound is borked, completely degraded while absolutely no interaction was doneā€¦ This thing is not reliable, at this point I would not bring it on stage. Needs firmware update badly.

Will be interesting to see the frequency of updates for theseā€¦

Last (and only) one was late september. They should have plenty of user feedback nowā€¦

lets hope some updates will still be forthcoming. At minimum, Iā€™d like a program change send per track/clip (depending on whether a track is on clip mode or track mode) for external MIDI.

Cherry on top would be the ability to have a ā€œscatter busā€ so you could pick and choose which tracks are affected by scatter. Currently either all tracks or a single track is affected by scatter, preventing more useful combos. If they cant give us scatter bus, at least make scatter destination configurable for each pad separately!

Ah yes, and this one - allow clip custom colouring like on the scatter pads!
