MC 707 / 101 : New Roland Grooveboxes

awesome. I have to admit I only know few of them. Never read the manual, just watched a few short videos to get going and finding them by accident

Found a couple of bugs, if anyone cares to test:

  1. Chord edit mode, setting a chord and previewing it can cause arp to be activated without user interaction to turn arp on.

  2. In a project with a 16 step looper on track 1 and a 128 step 4 note chord progression on track 4, sometimes on the loop boundary there is a slight timing glitch on the looper track, like it comes in a little late.

Nice rundown!
Smaller than a paperback book, powerfully deep.
Minimal interface. Roland loves the alpha dial and deep menu system, don’t they?
I think it could win an award, and also come in last place, for its user interface/experience.

Could someone help enlighten me with how user audio/samples work on the 101/707? I’ve read manuals and firmware update documentation but still don’t quite get it.

So the looper is 60 secs? Does this just work like a basic guitar pedal looper, each new pass overdubs the last, and it takes up a whole track on the 101/707? And is it 60 secs per project or instance of the looper? Can you have it on more than one track?

Otherwise, there’s a 12/6 minute limit for mono/stereo user samples. Is this also per device, per project, per track? I understand its per project and can be assigned across the tone and drum tracks as drums and sample instruments etc. But does it also mean you could import a 6 minute stereo file, assign it to a midi note and trigger it in the sequencer or externally?

Lastly, on the 101, can you use the usb return as an audio input from an ipad, either as a sound source fro a track or sampling or looper input - or is this just on the 707?

First little jam, crappy ipad mic sound recording as it is late here, but quite nice acid sound.

@Stone262 no overdub on looper unless you use 2 tracks and bounce, 12/6 minutes total sample memory per project, didn’t try a long sample yet but you would not be able to play it in internal sequencer without using 128 steps 1/8 division and very low tempo, don’t know about externally, possibly. Looper is 60 sec total per project, you can have up to 4 looper tracks but you’d soon use up all the sample time, maybe a better way would be to use loops in a drum kit then you could have more different loops, but no timestretch. If you use 4 looper tracks you can’t have some clips that are not looper as track type is per project not per clip. Tone and drum clips are more flexible I think so far.

In addition to the Looper you can also load a user sample into a Tone track and play your sample back polyphonically EDIT: and chromatically. The parameters for manipulating the sample are somewhat limited, Start, End, Loop, looping mode, ADSR, and cutoff and res are there, but you get the dedicated Multi Effect for the Track - not too shabby. Loading a strange snippet (field recording, phrase from a song) yields enough fun for me, but do not expect fancy sample processing.

Haven’t tried loading user samples into a kit, but that should be fun too, especially when combined with parameter locks/motion sequencing.

This thing is looking more and more like a keeper for me (in my albeit uncommon and very specific use case(s) :blush:).

I found a cheat sheet at github, but it was a bit out of date and had a few errors, so I corrected it, made it printer friendly, and added the new shortcuts plus some undocumented ones that I found, I don’t know how to do pull requests on github (I don’t use it) but if anyone wants to upload this version there then feel free, share it, modify it or do whatever you want with it, hope you find it useful. Unfortunately I had to choose a category to upload it here so it is under Octatrack as there isn’t a general document section in the files area, hope that is ok with @moderators @Elektron

With the tone generator in 1.6 can you save ones you like as a preset of sorts? Can’t find any info on it. Thanks.

No, you can only save the project with the tones in it. You can’t save any tones as a single patch. :frowning:

Heh, I thought I was tripping when I could not figure out how to do probability on a step, “I know it possible, or is it?, yes I have done it before, maybe that was another piece of gear? Nah it can deffo do probability, where the hell is it?” :laughing:

In case it helps anyone, yeah it can do probability but only on drum tracks, not on tone tracks (as I was trying to do) bit of a strange omission but hey ho.

seems like an easy update, since they also included ratcheting on tone tracks, which was exclusive to drum tracks before

I just beat my head against the desk for not realizing you can’t copy and paste steps on Drum Tracks but you can on Tone Tracks. :grimacing:

Hit the drum pad you want to add it to, hit SEQ, hold shift and hit the step where you want it, turn C4 to enter whatever value you want.

Gotta say once you add your own samples it really opens the box up, samples sound great in it.

Meant ratchets on Tone tracks. That was how I read @Unifono’s post. Completely possible I misinterpreted it.

Which kind of samples do you use on it?

At the moment just a few 303 loops, some drums, a few synth samples, but definitely going to add a lot more. Love this damn little box, it ticks so many boxes (punintentional!) in my “needs” list, and it is a little like a swiss army knife, does not try to do too many things, but does what it does with relative ease and minimum of fuss.

Long been a fan of the Roland Micro Composer paradigm, MC-4b and 202 were obviously my favourites, the rompler ones were ok, 707 I didn’t gel with, I think because of the audio limitation did not live up to my expectations, I might try another if they address that, but little 101 is sweet as a nut.

I think this is the device that I have been looking for since I had my first kid 4.5 years ago. It is portable, sounds excellent, has a great sequencer; it can also load samples, be played live or step sequenced and motion sequenced/paremter locked, and used as a sequencer for external devices. And I can record all 4 channels separately down a USB cable into my laptop.

Peter Kirn asked who this device was for. I think it’s for musicians with limited music time and no space (my Korg XD module lives under the bed). So… parents?

In any case, I am fairly convinced that I am keeping it even if it does have its quirks. What gear doesn’t?

Edit: and yes, I think it is better than the Circuit, which is what I thought was going to be mommy’s little helper. :laughing:

Edit 2: and no, this is not a sound designing machine. Yes, you can manipulate the sound, but I plan to sample the hell out of it into Bitwig.
