Mfb dominion 1 + elektron/other

So after over a year+ of drooling over the end of the sonic state review I think I might have a dom 1 coming my way as a birthday gift next week  A big box arrived and is taunting me.

Probably not going to get much time on it straight over next few weeks but I want to test it as thoroughly as possibly so there’s no nasty surprises later and needs to go back for repair etc.

Im fine testing the internal stuff but I have zero modular/cv experience and want to check that out ASAP too.

Wondering if any of you guys can advise on some routing/patching that’ll be interesting and also give it a thorough going over?

CV stuff I have -
Analog Keys
Ms20 mini
VOLCA sample
VOLCA keys

I’d love to involve my OT too but guessing that’ll be limited to just simple din midi clock/transport/note as the Dom 1 is apparently quite limited for midi.

Any advice/ideas would be great, thanks!

I don’t have much else to say than it’s a keeper. Love mine!

I have quite an eurorack collection but I have to admit that I haven’t even tried Dom1 + euro together properly.

You should be able to sequence it with AK at least, perhaps some extra CV too. Midi specs are the only minus on Dom1 - you can control pitch bend and modulation, though. It took me some time to get used to ribbon style pitch/modwheel.

When we get our studio reorganized, I can place Dom1 next to my eurorack - then I’m gonna test pressure their co-existence better! Interested of tips, too!

Thanks. Yeah from everything I’ve seen/heard it’s a def keeper. Can’t wait to get my hands on it! Guess I’ll just start connecting stuff and see what happens  I need to read up on a bit but should be fun when it’s sorted.

It’s pretty much self explanatory, the whole thing. The layout is so great, so it’s so fun to tweak. Mostly you need manuals with the bottom part settings, etc.

Yeah besides the sound I’m really looking forward to having a ‘tons of possibilities’ yet still mostly ‘knob per function’ UI to mess with

Hi.

I´m a Dominion 1 user since1 year or so, and as Lukree says It´s a keeper.
I use it live, playing the keys and running the apregio + turning those many knobs to diff. flavours. You´re gonna be happy with wast sound palette you can get out of this synth.

I don´t have any Eurorack stuff, but since I got the Dom1 I´ve slowly drifting towards this deamon/drug/adiction so I don´t think it will be long before… The only thing that´s been holding me back from starting this addiction, is the lag of videos of eurorack/dom1 on the web.
I did get hold of some patch cables the other week been messing about just patching internal on the dom1 and found new sounds, so go explore.

I don’t have any eurorack but have been playing around with the D1 and the M32 recently. The two play very nicely together with all of the typical CV and audio routing options that you’d expect by having four oscillators (routing the moog one in through the noise/ext on the D1 mixer), leveraging 2 envelope generators, multiple LFOs, two sequencers, etc. Short of going full on eurorack I can’t think of a better partner for the D1 or visa versa.

I haven’t gotten too excited about tying it to the AK at this point despite the CV controls because it just doesn’t seem to have the same ability to route signals at different points of the chain unless it’s the AK/A4 controlling the D1.

I’m horrible about putting together videos but I could probably do a short one if you want to see the D1 with a M32. Not anything terribly exciting compared to a full modular but still kind of cool.

@Embeaux, please do

Yep, any D1 with CV would be cool!

Yeah that would be great if you get some time, thanks! Been on and off about the m32 for a while. Very cool but can’t afford a modular habit  sounds like a nice little setup with just that and the dom1 tho so maybe I’ll re-think/stop fighting it

So I finally got around to trying to make a video. Basically turned out like shit (M32 patch bay got knocked out of the frame) so I’ll try again but in the meantime the things I was covering were basically using the two of them together. Here’s what I was planning on covering. Let met know if you want to see anything else:

  1. Raw sound of the D1 with one, two and three oscillators. LP1 Filter cutoff at max and resonance at min.
  2. Raw sound of the M32 pulse oscillator. LP filter cutoff at max and resonance at min.
  3. Taking CV1 (D1) out into the VCO 1V/OCT (M32) and ADSR2 (D1) into the CVA CV (M32) and playing the M32 from the D1’s keyboard.
  4. Taking VCO Pulse (M32) into the Ext In (D1) and adding the M32 oscillator to the D1, essentially adding a fourth oscillator (but removing the noise source).
  5. Demonstration of a few of the D1 Filter settings in this mode.
  6. Taking the Mix Out (D1) into the Mix 1 (M32), patching the VC Mix (M32) to Ext Audio (M32), and setting the MIX at 50% with 5 oscillators through the M32 filter (D1 VCO1, VCO2, VCO3, Noise/Ext [really M32 Pulse], and M32 internal osc).
  7. Taking VCO SAW (M32) into Mix 2 (M32) to add a sixth oscillator through the m32 filter.
  8. Routing ADSR1 Out (D1) into VC MIX CTRL (M32) to modulate the mix between the Mix Out (D1) and VCO SAW (M32) which is then fed at 50% into VCO MIX with the internal Pulse.
  9. Removed Mix Out (D1) from MIX 1 (M32) and replaced it with VCO PULSE (M32) and then routed VCA (M32) back into Ext In (D1) which now replaces the D1’s Noise mixer with both the SAW and PULSE from the M32.

I’ll make another attempt to see if I can get this demoed. Still trying to master the DSLR as a video recorder.

Sounds great. Interested in possibly getting the Dom1/mother 32 combo here too so it’d be cool to see what kind of stuff you’re getting in to there

Ok I’ve posted it on Youtube. Hope it helps.

This is great. Helps me get a grip on some of the further possibilities from this kind of routing. Thanks!
