Movies where the Music steals the Scene *SPOILERS*

also Jóhann Jóhannsson score in Sicario was very powerful

really wish Villeneuve kept him on Blade Runner 2049 rather than going for Zimmer

This is the scene that came to mind as to a song elevating a scene. This shot is pretty derivative but the song just hits so right. At the time this came out I was so moved by the song that I took it to my band at the time. We made an extended arrangement for our three piece post-country instrumental band that became a crowd favorite and staple of our live show.

This may be five of the greatest minutes in all of cinema! The motif all comes together here and the visual is a near perfect compliment. There’s a physical relief when the second watch begins its chime. The guitar when it comes in! And then the horns! And then the motif returns as the watch winds down…

Reznor + Ross’ work in Gone Girl was great too

I had to rewind Vanilla Sky numerous times on account that one of the exposition scenes had a just lovely Sigur Ros track

Darks use of pop songs I thought was some of the best use of “real” music used as a score…

The Dan Deacon track I. The first season finale really made that whole ending for me

Hmm I’ll have to check that out!

Wasn’t Tarantino the person who started the whole “popular songs semi-ironically used in a new context” soundtrack thing?

the part where they are walking in the flooded tunnels and all you have is the clicks from the counters…that is spooky as F.

Just watched Dune.

Fucking hell Hans, calm the fuck down a bit, yeah?

As for scene stealing music, there’s this,

One of the best examples of subtle sound design really making a scene.

One of the best examples of soundtrack and cinematography working together

And then there’s this…just fucking genius use of music and images.

As a massive NIN fan boy, everything Ross and Reznor have collaborated on in film leaves me unable to focus on the imagery/story/plot as i get completely absorbed by the score…

To a lesser extent seeing Tron in the cinema was the same, i was so busy trying to unpack Daft Punks work that i couldn’t tell you what happened…

Such a wonderfully strange movie. I just finished the book for the second time. The movie doesn’t so much adapt the plot of the book as the tone, disturbing and otherworldly. That scene stuck out in my mind as viscerally unsettling. Thanks for reminding me, I need to watch it again :slightly_smiling_face:

The music and sound design was incredible in that scene in Annihilation! My favourite moment of the film.

I don’t know if the music “steals the scene” with these but some of my favourite movie music moments are:

  • “the pink room” scene in Fire Walk With Me. It’s just so visceral!
  • Run Lola Run (The whole movie)

  • Any Cliff Martinez score in a NWR film (Neon Demon and Too Old to Die Young are good examples)

  • and the ending of ‘Heat’ that utilizes ‘God Moving Over The Face Of The Waters’ by Moby.

Drive (2011) has one of the best soundtracks using real tracks and Songs . They fit so well aesthetically and take the whole film to another level . This compensates for the lack of dialog for the driver himself .

I don’t know if this qualifies since the music is so integral to the scene but damn:

All great films, but watch out for ichi the killer, it’s pretty rank. It’s not Miike’s most fucked up film, but it’s pretty close. He’s such an amazing director though and Ichi came out during his “hot” period when he was putting out half a dozen films a year, which makes the quality of the cinematography and direction all the more impressive.

I imagine most of his films will end up on the bonfire soon though.
