BOC’s Music Has The Right To Children turns 20 this month. It’s hard to believe that so much time has gone by. I also find it ironic that their production esthetic of a “timeless sound” is something that has aged as well as it has. It does indeed remain fresh sounding to my ears, in all of its 70s and 80s era documentary film warble.
Amazing album! The golden era of what people try to produce today, in my humble opinion.

you gotta play it on a heavy system…the sound is just mind blowing. it still gets me 20 years later.
Mostly without success, i think. Truely original music isn’t easily replicated, hence the timelessness of BOC’s tunes. Drukqs, which turned 15 recently, is another good example of this.
I always wondered if BoC used a lot of FM. For better or worse they have been associated with the Roland Juno and sh101, but I feel like their production techniques were very experimental and not just using cookie cutter synths or recording
i was fortunate enough to discover boc through a magazine review of geogaddi in 2002, and i owned both LPs within a week.
i’d only been concertedly exploring electronic music for a couple years at that point. though i knew right away i was listening to something special, i didn’t yet have the perspective to realize how special. now i do.
some artists take hold of you deeply enough that now and then it hits you, i’m in a those guys mood, gotta put them on right now. boc is one of them. and most often i’ve reached for music has the right.
If i recall correctly from interviews they used run-of-the-mill classic analog synths layered with atmosphere in the form of heavily processed field recordings played back with akai S1000s. I remember them saying that all of the drums in “An Eagle In Your Mind” were made by processing short snippits of their friends voices recorded while having a conversation.

The BOC devotees make the best youtube videos. The vintage footage makes for a nostalgic feel of innocence.
