Lots of new works enter the public domain today, in the US at least, thanks to a federal law going into effect. Plenty of audio recordings in there!

It aches that we can’t legally use work from less than a hundred years ago or so.

It’s nuts. Copyright has nothing to do with its original purpose.
I don’t really sample much pre-made music stuff, partly because it’s such a pain. But I’m a sucker for some good spoken-word recordings.
