Here’s a fun little challenge: Create a song with the Octatrack, using nothing but the default Facebook new message sound as your sound source. No other gear or software is allowed, except whatever you need to get the sample to your OT.
You can find the sound on Youtube, if you don’t have a Facebook account.
I’ll give it a go today, you are free to join the fun and post the results (if you wish).
Great! I’ll have a go at that… love these restrictive tasks.
Is resampling within the Octatrack allowed? (I remember joining in the Wilhelm Scream science lab a while back and resampling was strictly disallowed).
@Barfunkel - very cool track from just the facebook message sound! I like the rumbling bass that runs throughout and the melodic parts in the latter part of the track.
@TrabanT, I grabbed the wav from this link last night:
I thought that it would be cool to see what could be done with just one sample as I’ve only had the OT a couple months now.
Great learning experience. If you are somewhat new to the OT, do this challenge and you will be surprised at what you learn.
Almost any sound can be turned into a kick. Pitch it down, apply a pitch envelope (or in OT’s case, a one-shot LFO assigned to pitch), a filter with lots of resonance + a filter envelope. Play with the settings until it sounds like a kick.
Thanks!
I took this on as a way to break out of my normal routine on the octatrack.
Loaded up the facebook noise into flex slot1
Assigned track 1-7 to flex slot 1
Set Track 8 to Master
Tweaked each track until it sounded like a different percussion element.
I used the filters, comb filter, distortion, and pitch, playback rate primarily with a little spatializer thrown in on the scenes
Programmed 16 beats with those sounds.
set up a couple scenes to morph the sounds on the beats.
Re-sampled and saved those beats.
switched to bank 2
loaded up the beats I made.
put 2 on each pattern so I could crossfade between them
set up some scenes and the master track fx to sculpt the sound a little more and add variation
switched to bank 3
used 1 track assigned to the FB noise to create the ambient type noise that goes over the beat.
resampled and saved that
switched back to bank 2
loaded up the long ambient loop on a track
hit record…
Free trigger the ambient loop while tweaking the level and filters
press play on octatrack and do some live pattern chaining and crossfading while live triggering and tweaking the level and filter of the ambient loop.
Definitely a learning experience as far as workflow goes. previously I was trying to do everything in one bank and switching parts and stuff, but this just worked awesome… will integrate some of these techniques into my normal workflow for sure.
Cool work musicmagus… I agree tjhat this is a good technique for begginers to learn but also for experienced users… limitations make you know the deep parts of your machines…
