Panning problem on headphone out (solved - faulty adaptor)

Hey there! Got me a Digitakt about a month ago and while the thing’s a total beast, I discovered that panning doesn’t work on the headphone out (works perfectly well on the L&R outputs tho). I created a ticked and they answered a couple of days later suggesting a Factory Reset. Did that and the problem persists. So until they get back to me, any ideas what might be causing this?

If you’re using a jack adapter on the headphones, check it’s fully connected and that it’s not a mono adapter

Def a stereo adapter, tried a couple of them (w/ different headphones as well)

ok, sounds like it could b a hardware prob. nothing else i can think of to check. see what support says…

It’s weird that they even suggested this, the headphone output and the main outputs are physically connected to the same DAC.
A factory reset won’t do anything about that.

you’re probably right, but good looking out  sometimes it can be the simplest thing

Make sure to test your headphones with another stereo device before creating a ticket and going through the whole process.
(with the same adapter of course)

I sure did. The weird thing is that panning on the headphone out just lowers the volume a couple of dBs or so, for both channels. Doesn’t matter if it’s hard L, hard R, or just slightly off-center

That sounds like the channels are definitely tied together, otherwise you would be getting very different results.

If you checked your headphones, it must be a hardware fault like garf said.

Could be as simple as two legs of the headphone amp were bridged during manufacturing. These things happen and I can see how something like that would slip through QC.

Try the retailer where you bought it first if it’s just a month old, you bought a faulty device so the replacement could be a lot quicker than going to Elektron directly.

that actually makes a lot of sense, thanks for the insight! Will try the retailer tomorrow

Maybe a stupid question, but since it happens to me last year, I ask :stuck_out_tongue:

Does the headphone have the mic included? In this case the jack has 4 parts GND, L, R, Mic and even if it let you listen to the output signal Left and Right are messed up.

I’m sure I read that somewhere, glad you sorted that out! Not the case here tho - but it has happened to me (in a totally different context)

Solved but for anyone interested, here’s where the troubleshooting process went awry:

I have the DT 770 Pro that since 2019 use a M5 screw adaptor instead of the standard M8 format that everybody else does. This specific adaptor can’t be used as a plugged one so I was unable to use it with my earbuds while testing. I tried to reproduce the problem using the 770’s with another OEM plug-adaptor and panning was still not working properly (turns out that was just a loose connection because the hem on the 770’s prevented a proper tight connection). So I tried to connect my earbuds to the Digitakt’s heaphone out with the OEM adaptor. Panning still not working properly. Turns out that was because the earbuds actually have a mic (like Emadb here suggested and I kindly dismissed him). What made me thought that panning was working properly via the mixer is that the panning knob there added enough gain to the panned channel to accenuate the difference in the stereo image.

Elektron Support got back to me today ready to schedule a repair and as a last step they asked to send them a rec reproducing the panning issue.

tl;dr It was the damn Beyerdynamic adaptor all along. Which I’ve been using for over a year and never cared for panning until I got the Digitakt

At least we got you back into the land of stereo sound now

A couple years ago I was halfway into writing an e-mail to Elektron support because I was sure the encoders were behaving weird.
Just before I hit send I noticed a MIDI loopback cable was still attached. :grimacing:
