If I’m building up a song (in pattern mode), and I’ve now got a basic set of patterns running and sounding good but just want to swap the trigs on a single track, is there a simple way of doing this?
My understanding is that a pattern encompasses all tracks, so if I want to (for example) just change my kick drum but leave everything else the same I’d need to create an entirely new pattern via copy/paste, then edit the kick drum track on that?
A lot of times when playing/improvising I like to keep three tracks the same but the fourth track is one where I’m changing between different riffs, etc
So is the ‘standard’ workflow then one where I’ll need to build a pattern I like, then copy/paste it to a new pattern and then switch it? Is there a way to do this seamlessly? IIRC to paste a new pattern I have to switch to the new one first, which could potentially lead to a gap in time (or if I have pattern switch set to end of pattern, I could try to time it)?
It is, assuming I understand the point !. You can copy/paste a single track of a pattern. Just select track in grid mode and Fn+Copy then same but Paste in different pattern - you may need to copy the track sound too depending on the destination pattern. If that’s what was meant by ‘swap’
You can duplicate a pattern to any pattern slot in the bank without leaving the current one even whilst the seq is running

yes you can do it the way you suggest but what ModularOverkill is wanting is not available in elektron gear. Track “swapping” is available on roland groove boxes like the mc 909/505. This will allow you to remix your patterns with other patterns by interchanging the individual tracks on the fly. A great feature i wish elektron will adopt.
ah, i see, not something i’d long for, but it’d be welcome if there were some ways to post-process track seq data intelligently or introduce indeterminacy at that level (beyond the use of random lfos within the sound)
yeah other than keeping some duplicate patterns around you can experiment with pasting new tracks from other patterns in, i dunno. not quite live ready in all cases because you have to switch to the pattern that has the specific track you want, but it can work.
setting up performance controls and also mutes before hand isn’t simple, but it’s fun. it can be a good way to switch up tracks without actually changing them.
This is not really a sequencer thing but on the monomachine keyboard I used to set up drastic parameter changes to sounds with the joystick. With some imagination I could, in real time, switch between two (sometimes 4) pretty different sounding sequences while really just being in one. If you are using an external controller you can try setting something like that up.
