Technically it’s probably amazing. But that’s not what I’m looking for. I want something minimal, with instant or very fast startup. Not something covered in buttons.
Looks like the D100 is discontinued, too. Sony lists the D10 as its replacement

Well I suppose that could be a part of it, my card is 32gb.
Nothing faster than this. It’s instant:
yes it was discontinued long ago. still can be bought new at Ebay and elsewhere
but it’s the best if you don’t want to use external mics. which is not only a ‘technical’ aspect, but also the convenience, and something that one-button devices won’t provide, unfortunately…
just like you, I’d love to have a minimal all-in-one device… but what’s the point of immediate startup if recording sounds crap in the end? one can operate recorders like d100 pretty fast, but one can’t turn a TE or even a Zoom into d100.
the sad thing is, handheld recording is in decline. one has to compromise here or there. hope you find a suitable solution
D100 and D10 are way too big! No clue why they haven’t updated the M10. Hadn’t noticed them on eBay though, tempted to pick up a cute red one from Japan for when mine finally bites the bullet.
Yeah things like the D100 and D10 are not really pocket recorders but more suited to pulling out of a pack. It’s a shame there’s not more really high end small recorders out there, but it looks like for now the Sony A10 might be the best option even though it’s noise floor performance isn’t as good as the venerable M10.
This is a useful resource -
If you’re mostly recording loud sources up close you don’t need to worry so much about this, but if you want to record general ambience and quiet stuff you should probably get a much better recorder.
I just did a quick test of the Roland R-01, and my iPhone running both the Ferrite app, and the Stereo Microphone app. I put them on three tracks in Logic, equalized the volume levels, and did a quick comparison.
Ferrite was terrible. So bad that I think I must have screwed up the recording or export.
The surprise is that the Roland and the Stereo Microphone app are very similar. Similar dynamic range, similar sound quality. I usually make recordings to process in iOS apps and Ableton, so the phone might actually be good enough.
Still in the market for a simple recorder though.
I think I saw quite a few m10s at Ebay just recently? but I still refuse buying one despite its great size and very low noise because of its omni mics… that’s the one update which it really needs imo… as it is, there’s no stereo to speak of… but if it works for one’s task, then it’s an easy choice, without alternatives in this size
have you tried to compare StereoMic vs Audioshare in ‘measurement mode’? or maybe SM gives some sort of equivalent direct access to hardware w/o additional iOS gain/‘enhancers’?
According to the Stereo Mic dev, you can enable “measurement mode,” which disables iOS processing, but then you can’t record in stereo. There’s a good thread on the AudioBus forum about it.
It’s ugly AF, but the results are excellent. And stereo.
I have a tascam dr40, I wonder if an iphone could ever be the same in quality
I have a very small Olympus LS3 which I picked up second hand for about £60. It has a power slider and takes about 2 seconds to fully boot. It has a nice obvious record button. One press puts it in record pause mode, second press starts the recording. A third press will pause again, or you can press the stop button. When it’s recording the record button has a red led ring lit up around it, when in record pause it flashes. I’d say this is a quick simple UI.
You can plug the LS3 in by usb and it is a class compliant storage device, so it’s simple to transfer recordings off to a laptop or iPad. It’s also a class compliant audio device so you can use the mic or the line in to record onto an iPad and monitor through the headphone port.
It’s a great portable device.
I’ll second or third or whatever the H1n. Having owned a H6 and a H4, the H1n is way easier. Both the H6 and H4 were stupid to use, returned/sold immediately.

Good to know on boot time with SD size
I’m going to have to check out the hold feature
I used my spare 8gb card to test and as @plicktzah suggests, load time went down to 11 seconds. So it would seem processing time is faster with h1n and the other advantage of h1n is you can do overdub recording - meaning if you want to play guitar, then record a solo over that recording without damaging the original file you can do that. The advantage of H1 is the straightforwardness of having only the record button on the front making it slightly less fiddly to start and stop recording, however having the main function buttons on the front and larger is probably nice if you aren’t concerned with recording in the dark or fumbling to press record.
As @plragde indicated, line in recording or external mic in, as well as monitoring with headphones or external speakers, is done with 3.5mm jacks and I’ve had good luck with that, for line in I usually use an attenuation cable which means less fiddling with levels since the cable itself does the heavy lifting.
I would imagine however an iphone with an external mic would do a sufficient job but is a bit less convenient.
Looking forward for the Deity PR-2 recorder, very easy peasy
That PR-2 thingy reminded me of something … Zoom has this: https://www.thomann.de/intl/zoom_f2.htm and it’s probably the most idiot-proof way of recording a stereo signal on the go. Needs an external mic though.
it’s a walkman minus the tape transport.
it’s like a go pro for audio
cool!
If you ever become concerned with the quality, this video is very interesting and helpful for achieving a more balanced final product - he does a full analysis of internal mic frequency response and how to correct it to exactly flat.
I love this kid, he’s my favorite robot automaton. His audio interface reviews are the most detailed and honest you will find anywhere.
