I want to use the iPad with the DM1 drum computer software together with the OT Mk2. I can’t seem to really tempo sync the two machines. OT is master, DM1 slave. I use a USB to MIDI connection cable. I have also used the iRig, with the same problems.
For example this happens:
I record a loop from DM1 on the iPad and when I play both the sample and the iPad via a thru machine the sounds do not overlap at all. Also when I play the metronome it seems impossible to really have both the live iPad sound and the sample together with the metronome.
I also played with the audio latency setting, which changes the timing but does not correct it in the end.
Quite frustrating.
Anyone had this problem and knows a solution? Is it hardware? Anything else I can try?
Today i rehearsed with a colleague who has ableton. He had two midi out ports. To have the tempo for the Octatrack and Ableton in sync we need 0 ms for latency compensation; for the DM1 on iPad and Ableton to be in sync we needed 77 ms.
I use Alesis IO midi hub. It has midi in/out and and plugs into CCK/USB hub directly.
(I found the sync a bit dodgy with that app)
The advantage is a two way communication and the hub has audio out, headphones out and foot switch. I can record midi in/out of either.
(If I use laptop, Ableton, midi keyboard in the chain, I only go midi out from DT to iPad and keyboards go to DT midi in.)
The Alesis hub makes iPad more of a midi compatible instrument then just a receiver, because I can use fro example an Arpeggist app or any app that sends midi to DT.
Not bad for ~30€
