Hey guys, happy Digitakt owner here. I’m not very experienced with MIDI so I’ll do my best to explain my problem.
I’ve been toying around with Autobeat (a Max Live drum randomizer) and triggering my Machinedrum to create some super weird sequences which I would then shape to something normal. The MIDI channel was set to 1-4 and as you can see below, each track had its MIDI note which would trigger a track on the MD:
Now, I want to do the same on the Digitakt but it just doesn’t work. Here’s what I did:
read the manual, got the notes and set them up, set the MIDI out channel to 1 and Digitakt’s track channels all to 1. The result was ALL tracks being triggered with the same beat (not each with a unique sequence as on the MD)
I’ve then set the MIDI out channel to 14 and Digitakt AUTO MIDI to 14. The result was Ableton triggering a selected Digitakt track with the autobeat sequence. I’ve ended up soloing each Autobeat track and selecting a track on Digitakt and recording them one by one, but as you can imagine, this is a rather tedious process and removes all the fun.
What I want to do: I want Ableton and Autobeat’s each track to trigger the Digitakt’s corresponding track, all at the same time. So I can hit record, get them all into Digitakt and then start tweaking them.
Again, I’m not very good at this, hopefully I’ve described my problem well. I’m sure there is a fix that I’m simply not seeing, so if anyone could point out a flaw in my setup, I’d greatly appreciate it.
It looks from the interface as if Autobeat is sending different notes, I suppose on the same channel - I think what you want it to do, is to send the same note per drum track, but to different MIDI channels. Channel 1 is by default the BD, Channel 2 is the SD, etc.
I am 100% there will be a comfortable fix to this problem, but I am also relatively new to hardware MIDI paradigms so I am not going to suggest a fix!
If it were me, I would first try to figure out if Autobeat can send on specific MIDI channels per drum voice. If I discovered that it cannot, I would try to find a way of filtering and translating its output, using one of apparently tens of free tools for macOS designed to modify MIDI messages, like maybe MIDIPipe?
You’re absolutely right, splitting each of the Autobeat’s drum parts into a separate MIDI channel would probably do what I want it to do. I’ve downloaded MIDIpipe but am still trying to wrap my head around it. It’s also a bit a of a bummer that it can’t be integrated into ableton
Damn, surely there must be some workaround for separating the notes into different MIDI channels
Holy *****, that was it guys. All I had to do was set the Autobeat notes not to C0-G0 but to C-2-G-2. I can’t believe I’ve read that section so many times and the answer was right in front of me! Well; at least I now also know how to use MIDI patchbay
