Recording level for older samplers

Hi all,

When you are recording samples with an older hardware sampler (or even a newer one like the s2400) that is 16bit or below what level are you recording at? Are you recording as hot as possible without clipping for the best snr or are you leaving more headroom like you would do when recording into a daw at 24bit?

I would love to hear your thoughts on this. Thanks!

Generally you want as hot as possible, though if recording a more unpredictable signal leave a bit of headroom. It really depends on how good the metering is, a limiter before the sampler input can be useful both as a better meter and a means of ensuring you don’t clip the input.
