Forgive me if this has been discussed on here before (several different keyword searches came up with nada). So, because OT doesn’t allow midi sync over USB, does anyone else use an OB Elektron device for recording individual OT tracks bang on the grid of a DAW? Any downsides to this approach? My thinking is to solo OT tracks, send them into my midi synced DN and record each track individually from the DN’s main outs via OB, maybe even with a little of the DN master distortion on there for funsies. This would have the added benefit of everything lining up correctly in the DAW with minimal fuss, right?
That’s how I’m using it I have the Main Out going into the DT and Cue Out going into the DN
For 2 stereo channels…
midi Clock transport from DT and all works well minimal fuss
Brilliant. Thanks for confirming my suspicions that it’s the best way to go. I’m going to trial it on a new track tonight
I haven’t tried midi sync yet. I think I’m afraid to spend hours trying to dial things in and then give up like I’ve done so many times before when trying to sync between a DAW and hardware. But, I have been recording through OB2 with my AH and it’s been a blast! As long as I make sure when I’m recording I have all other programs on my laptop off. Possibly because I only have 8 gigs of ram. I’ve just been putting a 4/4 kick pattern, just to open the track, then start the track. The 4/4 pattern is just to tell Ableton what tempo I’m at. Then I go back and adjust the the start point.
if you get Ableton synced perfectly, please give me some tips on how you did it. I would love to put some effort into that if it did’nt take away from my recording time at the moment.
As it would require a track by track recording, what about internal OT recording?
Can be quantized, best quality, avoiding a DAAD quality lost.
Possible to record several tracks.
Maybe you want to record DN at the same time, or there’s another reason?
No other reason than perfect on the grid sync for individual solo’d tracks without any need to realign things later on in a DAW. Also, I’d rather not record back into OT just because I don’t want to fill the card with long samples. Plus, seeing as my recordings aren’t high quality and I use bit crush and other degrading effects on near enough everything, it shouldn’t be too much of an issue regarding quality haha
Okay, I’ve got it working well with Ableton Live. Live tells DN the tempo and gives transport information, which is then passed to OT via a midi cable. The trick is to open the Audio preferences in Live, check the input latency, then minus this off in the Driver Error Compensation (forget the output latency - this was my original mistake and it led to my initial hits being cut off!). Et Voila:
Really? It’s that easy? Ableton calculates the latency and then you just type in the same number? Why wouldn’t this just be automatic? Maybe for fine tuning?
By the way. Thank you Craig. Will try this tonight.
Because I like to watch the audio being recorded on my 27" screen
Perfect grid sync with quantized recordings you import in a DAW. You can delete recordings. Give it a try!
I’m definitely interested! So, as discussed on another thread, how would I record 8 (or 7 in my case as 8 is the master) tracks simultaneously (or not) for a six minute track using lots of flex and RAM already? Also there’s Arranger in use for switching patterns, plus some use of the fader for intro and outro. Is it possible to do all this inside the OT without any free tracks left over for recording? Your advice and knowledge is much appreciated as always
So Analog Heat can also be used to get the OT into a DAW via OB2?
Fuck YES!!! Best 2in 2out sound card ever.
Hells yes!
Seems hard to record 7 tracks in those conditions.
You can check available recording time in RECORDING SETUP 1, after setting DYNAMIC RECORDERS to YES, RESERVE RECORDINGS to NONE (or RESERVE LENTH to 0).
It’s obviously limited, but you can use the 8 recorders independantly from tracks settings, (track length is linked but it doesn’t matter for long recordings).
My personal approach can’t suite everyone, I mostly use short samples or recordings in Flexs, I use Statics for longer stuff, so I can make longer recordings. I particularly enjoy to record directly in OT without DAW.
I’m not really interested in several separate tracks, but it’s definitely possible to record 8 tracks from loops, parts of a song.
Another interesting approach is to record crossfader midi automation in a DAW or a linear sequencer. Play with automation, record 1 track or more with OT, or 2 with OT outputs.
Awesome. So will recording in this way take account of pattern/part changes as dictated by Arranger? As in, press play in Arranger Mode and the recorded WAV will just capture everything?
And if I wanted to record post AH, I would have to use the stereo sends trick…but would have to use a through track to record? Would be a cool way to work if my computer crashed . Also a good experiment to get to know the OT’s possibilities.
Yes OT can record what you hear.
why don’t you use the overbridge plugin to record? so you don’t have to play around with latency compensation and everything is absolutely in sync. I always use it to get my modular into the daw and it works perfectly.
