The way I see it, if a bit simplified for arguments sake:
Some synths have way less options, resulting in good sounds quickly. A4 has way more options and flexibility. But in a way, over-exaggeraring, a super simple synth is sort of a “preset”. So if you want quick, just use presets in the A4:) It will sound good just as quick
(Not fully sure if this arguments holds true completely, but I feel it does a little bit)
The presets really left me cold. They don’t “sell” the synth to the new owner at all. I got a couple of free soundpacks from elektron, and they were also very meh. However, they were a good starting point for tweaking and learning how A4 does it. This reply has kind of lessened my regret about selling it a little. Thanks!
Me too. He he.
Propellerhead rebirth was my first softsynth( apart from stranger stuff like buzz and audiomulch) so a4 is the logical first synth( apart from korg er-1…)
I still don‘t have a normal simple poly synth, can‘t decide… maybe cobalt(?)…
I have the Cobalt 8M. It sounds fantastic.
Like really good.
The only thing I don’t like about it is how much the FX affect the patch volume, which there are workarounds for (dedicated gain per patch) but it’s just a little annoyance.
Other than that it’s really very good, the Oscillator algorithms are very clever.
Yes, just that i also don‘t have a normal simple vst midi controller. So I thought with the keys( also nice fatar) Just the cobalt layout is not completely simple and normal…
Thanks to adam jay I know why my bass station isn‘t working well as midi controller ( strange double midi stuff and other…) bs2 would be perfect in size and normal layout.
But computer keyboard and mouse has advantages also, for the not much time i spend with the computer…
And digitone with its scales and a keystep also has advantages for music idiots like me…
But anyway playing once a normal poly synth would be nice…
Dsi ob 6 looks normal and has midi ( in my dreams my favourite first synth and nice controller for ob-xd vst)
In other news, I got mine 6 weeks ago from someone just like you…as he said it was too much for him… I love it, AND it gets better the more I get to know it.
So from people like me, to people like you- thanks .
I hear ya. I often wish I had an A4 instead of an AK. I just reallllly wish there were a few more voices… I know the OSCs have crazy flexible duo tones, but still…
Sold my AK just recently… what to replace it with…?
I found the OP-1 to be VERY appealing and I regret so much selling it!!! Sure, getting it synced with a bigger setup is a true pain in the a**, but I LOVED jamming around with it. So many creative possibilities on it. Plus I liked those animations tbh (and my little daughter played with that Cow-effect for hours )
Funny story bout (almost) selling my A4: decided to sell it some time ago (same reason as OP - not much time with it, no instant rewards). Put it on eBay. Interested buyer came to my studio to check it. He turned the unit on and jammed the hell out of it for 30 minutes right in front of my eyes. I was blown away and decided not to sell it immediately. He was pissed of course. Felt sorry for him, but could not sell it after seeing that…
