Shallow Water (Users/Uses)

Curious if there are any Fairfield Circuitry Shallow Water users? I’m pretty interested in the unique and seemingly difficult to emulate effects for making samples from the DN and AK.

Any users interested in sharing their experiences (good/bad) or sharing some tracks or examples of it (shameless self-promotion welcome)?

I had one for a little while, but sold it earlier this year (along with all other mono pedals). It is a great effect, really well made, but takes a bit of coaxing to get a lot out of it. That is, it’s pretty subtle. In my experience, it’s best suited for single tracks that are not too busy, but still have some dynamics and/or movement. Check out blank for.ms on Instagram / YouTube. He really sold me on it in the first place.

I really love it. It’s a super-slick, squishy, nostaligic-feeling pedal. The LPG/filter on it is smashing too.

(I’m selling one on the ‘Sell’ page here if you’re interested)

Are you selling one because you had two? If not, curious why. I had a Deco. Loved it, recorded with it, gigged with it, but I swapped out some gear making it a bit redundant.

Shallow Water seems a bit different…

I’ve got both a Shallow Water and a Deco - they are totally different animals. I’m selling because I’ve accumulated way too many pedals in the last three years, don’t gig, and am a skint freelancer so need to get my bills paid! :joy:

Thanks for the reference!

Any shallow water users still here?

I have one and have been trying it on my moog sub 37 and I’m struggling with the levels of the LPG knob and mix/level on the shallow water. I have the idea some low end is cut by the pedal, is this correct?

What did you do with the BOOST and PAD jumpers within the shallow water? leave them as is, or switch them?

I really want one… But honestly, it’s always been just a bit toooo pricey for me to actually buy – for that price, I prefer more flexible effects, or something stereo. But it’s still on my list, and I’d ideally want to eventually get two for stereo use… :see_no_evil:

It does seem to cut some bass for me. Nothing I’m worried about though. How are you struggling with it? Not sure I understand what your issue is - Overall Volume? is it clipping? Or how the filter and gate open?

My current settings just used with an 0-coast and the internal jumpers:

Had one, loved, sold it. Common story, I suppose. The issue was it really couldn’t do anything my plugins couldn’t, and I’m always hooked up to the DAW anyways. Still a fabulous effect.

Just moved over to using a DAW, would love to find something to replicate the Shallow water! What are you using?

Yep, I found it cut some low end, but I think that is half of what makes the shallow water sound it’s special way.

I found on synths it always worked better on PAD with BOOST in the lower setting. That gave the best response from the filter. I tried adjusting the LPG trim pot, but the factory setting seems best for guitar and synths to me. I also liked it best on mono synths, not too great for even a simple 2 or 3 note chord.
I eventually worked out how to get the same effect using the wacky number of mods in the DSI Rev.2, so I sold it.

wow thanks, very helpful! seems you adjusted the PAD to on, and left the boost on.
did you also adjust the LPG setting trimpot from within? could you also make a picture of the angle its set to? this might be it…

thanks for this, will give it a try!

RC-20 and Audiothings Wires. Plenty of warble, filtering and modulation between the two. Satin is good too.

Thanks for this! I have RC-20. Will try Wires out! I need to work out how to get that LPG working in a DAW!

I just built a M4L device that tries to mimic the Shallow Water!

SW is one of the vibest pedals I own and I don’t think I’ve quite captured it here (I don’t have one to compare rn), but it gets you in the ballpark. Some mods I’ve made are:

  • stereo mode (S)
  • normal vibrato (V)
  • flanger mode (F)

I only started building with Max couple weeks ago after watching @ess’s tutorial stream, so I would appreciate feedback if you have any

Shallow Water.amxd (186.9 KB)

p.s. another similar plugin option that I really like is Echomelt.

This Reaktor emulation is great -

thanks, I also have this impression, when I play chords it quickly distorts, better on mono synths.
