So I'm thinking about getting a Monomachine

…how does it compare to Ableton’s operator? Does it have features like fine, coarse, tune etc. And can I make my own wave forms and combine them like in operator?

Thanks. Loving this board so far.

Just purchased MnM 3 wks ago after price drop making it #4 ( MD , A4, Octa, and MnM ). Unique “sound module” , tonal, melody synth w great seq & arp . Good box to add to live perf setup, e.g. a simple set w 2 boxes . . I’m still on learning curve. Nothing ( neither MD, A4, nor Octa) does true FM synthesis like MnM, for a whole new palette of sounds.

I use Ableton only to record. Haven’t used operator but its probably versatile . FM synthesis in a live box intrigues me ,and Elektron’s probably gonna d/c production. Check Dataline’s demo on Elek site ; also artist LEM for examples. Check artist Sophie ( elektronauts archive interview) for MnM snd design examples . It’s a good buy .

Nothing like one of LEM’s live performance to hear what MnM is capable of.

I also like https://www.youtube.com/user/radoslavvalkov/videos : he only uses MnM and knows the machine very well !

The Monomachine owns its territory, I’m not sure it’s good to compare it to other synths… Better to let it drive you in what it can do…

Be careful though : it might be a path you’ll not come back from !

I’ve had mine for about 1.5 months and I can’t imagine life without it. It’s def. limited in a lot of ways per part (so like, the drums themselves are limited, the synths slightly, the pattern stuff), but there’s so much available that you almost don’t notice.

I’m trying to learn it as best I can and then creating loops and parts that I record and save for future use in my DAW. It’s a blast hooking it up to my MS2000BR, Virus C, Fatman, and VolcaBeats and having 10 tracks to go crazy on.

Buy one. You won’t look back.

@all in this topic
I love MnM, and in fact this is my favorite stuff in current setup, but to be honest it’s a gear with two faces.

It’s very fun and creative, but it’s very hard to master.

Imho it’s a good choice for people who knows good about synthesis, and are experienced in sound sculpting. For beginners imho it isn’t a good choice, because the best features (and good sound results) of MnM requires a knowledge “what is actually doing”.

I realize that some may have different opinion about that, but i know both kind of guys (experienced vs beginners) and this is my conclusion.

@villageidiot
If you know well about operator, it’s good idea to try Monomachine, but be prepared for a different way of thinking. Elektron world is pararell universe (i.e. filter type and basic filter parameters, strange envelope implementation, ton of buttons combi, lot of synthesis parameters you’ve never heard before, and many more).

Correction ! To my previous post . Monomachine

A4 will do simple but very useful type of FM synthesis. New OS upgrade 1.22 . Just watched Cuckoo’s video . He gets some insane FM bass , out of that box.

Yet the MnM FM is very unique ! Potentially great “glitch” , atonal & metallic sounds for Detroit , Deep & minimalist styles , especially LIVE .

Still very happy w my MnM . Slowly learning to tame the FM algorithms. Elektron gear all tends to have “rad” parameter changes w small adjustments. Accept this fact. !

MnM does Karplus Strong Synthesis per “Elektron Next Level2011” tips pdf document .( Check Electronauts Files ? Archives . ) This is like modular action !

Great sound design device; agree w the others above. I grabbed my MNM when prices dropped ; plan for live use AND to sample weird sounds into Octatrack for manipulation.

Machinedrum x 3 years , A4 x 2yrs, Octa 1.5 yrs- still learning !

Ive Had My MonoMachine For nearly 5 weeks Purchased 3 days before The Price Drop Secondhand For £640, Literally New.
I Love It So Much It Has Been An Amazing Journey An It Has Only Just Begun…
I Find It Extremely Inspiring And Once You Watch Afew Video’s On Workflow It Is Fairly Straight Forward.

I Recommend Buying One Or Two If You Can Afford it?
I Will Buy A MachineDrum UW next But Will Buy Another MonoMachine After That.

Rob.

I just ordered a Monomachine and really lookng forward to it. When I get it I have all the Elektron machines except the Machinedrum  Love the concept.

Where did you order it from?

I also.bought mnm recently. Love it, but not your standard synth, requires a different way of thinking. Love the single user waveform capability. Just wish more waveforms were available online, found only four or five free sets, a few on the elektron site. This machine alone opens up so many different sounds. Would like to learn how to build these waveforms one day.

Where?!

Got mine direct from.elektron during the sale.

Nice. I am waiting (im)patiently for their return!

It’s a different beast to Operator… i often end up making tracks that use both Operator and MNM - purely because for me they offer different things. I find that if i have something very particular in mind I can get it through finely programming Operator… almost for the more boring, everyday sounds that are necessary for certain genres. Whereas for less rigid, more fun experiments the Monomachine really shines…

You have less control with the FM synths on the MNM but on the plus-side the workflow is more fun and adventurous i find…

Monomachine is pretty much a digital modular in a box
Think mutable instruments and Make noise digital modules
Put it this way - I had mi braids one week and sold it on because the mono just sounded so much better

Ah, so that’s what people are seeing in those modules. I love the MnM workflow and interface for this, while I never felt like dealing with the menu’s etc. in digital modules for whatever reason.

Yes, I obviously missed that post (thanks for recommending me!), just to update my channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRm3ZX6JwM9okIZgmcapqpA
