Say I have a live gig with for example the Analog Rytm and the Octatrack. I set the OT to recieve a master clock and transport from the AR. I start the AR and the OT starts. Right in the middle of the set I press stop on the OT by accident or to load another project or something. Now the AR continues to play. What if I want the OT to start again in sync with the AR. Is there a start mode that waits until the next 1 beat?
I saw this old thread, the only solution was to buy some extra hardware and plug it in between the AR and the OT.
The midipal/midibro/midigal has a sync latch app that is inspired by the Mungo Sync2. Itâs generally a diy only project, but the Mungo and Touchprone donât seem to be available anywhere so at least it might be a possible solution.
Many years ago I thought how nice it would be to be able to do exactly this; therefore the Sequentix P3 and Cirklon can send a fresh MIDI start to synced devices at the beginning of the next global bar (you just hit run/play while itâs already running).
Obviously it depends on P3/Cirklon being master but it means you can stop any connected device(s) manually and know it/they can be brought in neatly when wanted, without having to stop/start the main sequencer.
I thought it might catch on and start spreading about (like other P3 ideas) but it seems this one hasnât.
Given the way Elektrons cue up pattern changes rather than jumping as soon as the programme change arrives, you might think theyâd also âqueue upâ a Start message too.
I also found a (quite expensive) hardware midi clock that could be used as master, and the midi clock has a resync function which sounds like the thing I want.
"Resync/Reset - Button
If pressed during playback, this button causes a reset of the song
position pointer in all connected devices at the beginning of the next
bar, followed by âMIDI Startâ. With this feature you are able to re-sync
slaves during playback without interruption. "
Btw, cueing up start messages, is that something that is allowed in midi? Probaply, eh?
Imho, start and stop should be considered shift functions on sequencers, grooveboxes and drum machines. Especially on those with large easy to hit buttons like on Elektrons.
HmmâŚmaybe changing the button cap for a tiny one would work? A tiny cap that has to be pressed with the fingernail.
You can stop then restart the OT when synced to external midi clock, stop then just hit start manually, it isnât too difficult to get it timed right, I have found.
Yeah, just a matter of practise. I also donât midi sync effects like delays anymore, tapping the tempo is actually much more hassle-free. Less gear connections, less potential to fuck up.
Practise a few times and youâll hit it on the spot.
