I love it. My favorite boxes are always the ones where I can create full tracks with them standalone. I also don’t gel with samplers nearly as much as synthesizers. So a box that has 12 super versatile synth tracks for building up compositions is ideal for me.
I got the cycles as a travel companion and it’s a fun little drum machine with some really great sound engines, but I just don’t click with it the same as my other Elektron’s. I just feel like there are too many compromises you need to make with the limited modulation. The Syntakt’s fully featured envelopes, dual lfo’s and three filter setup really takes those engines to a whole new place. And that’s before you get into how you can process those sounds through the analog fx block, which can really transform things. And the ability to sequence and modulate the FX is a huuuuuge upgrade that I really hope the other digi boxes get. The improvements to tuning stability on the analog side is another huge upgrade from the rytm. The DVCO is way more flexible now, the kicks feel a little more solid, snare is a maybe a bit snappier, haven’t done a side by side yet.
This box is a perfect example of the whole being greater than the sum of it’s parts. The way it all comes together in a unified music making ecosystem is pretty special and really feels like a continuation of the silver box legacy to me. It’s early days still, I’m hopeful we will get more machines, but what’s there already covers a huge range of sounds.
Same here, it’s a fun machine, not only for drums, but the Digi format does suit me a lot better.
The fact the injected de ST with both digital and analog synthesis + the fx track and analog fx make this a very capable machine. A dream come true.
Some people complaining about the fact it does not have sample functionality.
I think Elektron made the right choice here. I like samplers, but I have so much fun with the MC, the ST seems to take this to another level.
Otherwise combining it with the DT feeding the output of the DT into the input of the ST and using the analog FX and you got yourselves one holy smoking son of bitch drum/sampling/synth combo.
Looking forward to get my hands on this one, should arrive today.
I think it’s a good idea to make ST not sample, but I would love to at least one Sample-Play Track (maybe only Track 7 or something, to make it not rival to MS and DT) for HH Samples. I tried for hours yesterday, it’s the same issue with every other Drum synth, I hate the HH sounds. I’d rather use a short Noise zip then use the HH Engines
Everything else is exactly what I hoped.
My first venture with Syntakt! I did apply a bit of low cut to tame the bass (got a bit carried away apparently) and some gentle limiting.
Used 8 tracks, a few analog but mostly digital. The ‘snare’ is PC Carbon I believe, probably my favorite machine so far. FX track used and at some point I switch most/all tracks into it on the routing page. Some slight delay time modulation happening too.
That’s that shit. Funky as hell.
I really can’t stop listening to the snippet. You have a great ear for melody. It’s also got me super excited about the more melodic potential of the syntakt. Can’t wait to get mine!
haha, thanks I hope you will like it! I also did two of the factory patterns (A15, B9), they have a similar vibe…
Thanks that you shared this excellent jam of @myhrman : I’m listening to this on my phone speaker and I am genuinely stunned how good this sounds!
I was about to share one of his sketches here but it was already posted!
I did want to ask if anyone else is doing hiphop with it yet. I was listening to the Soundcloud demos on the Syntakt’s Elektron page and I thought those stood out.
Really interested to see how far people can push this thing. I know it’s already cliché to think of it as a beefy Model:Cycles, but I’m into that.
Dub techno experiments.
Using 3x SY Bits, tuned to make a minor triad chord., then tweaked with CTRL-ALL, then drums added from BD Modern and UT Noise hats.
Was a lot of work.
Made me appreciate my Nord Lead 3 just a little more.
Just some master limiting added.
Dude. ST seems destined for dub techno.
That’s sounds great. I especially like how the hat/shaker sounds.
Wow. This sold me on it. Are you on IG?
excellent.
So, I’m curious, what was a lot of work, and what do you feel you gained over using the SY Chord machine?
no IG. This forum and soundcloud are as close as I get to social media
Been a bit too busy with work today to make a full track but thought I would share this simple acidy loop I started working on. Same deal, stereo out through a bit of parallel comp and some limiting
Edit: finished the pattern and reuploaded
Well, firstly; I just updated the file, after another hour of tweaks.
SY Chord because it gives me a sawtooth waveform, more so than Chord machine.
That said, it doesn’t give a bandpass that is easily modulatable with an EG the way many of my synths do. So using an LFO to modulate the base width filter takes work.
Also, just tweaking each voice independently creates some nice variation in the chord but you can easily lose balance.
The envelopes are great, and with the step length set just right, are powerful, but they have a wide range, from snappy to slow, and tweaking them just right, X 3 voices, takes time.
Thanks for the details. I can hear more variation in the chords now. I can see that if you want to do more voicing within the chords, you need to go to the multiple tracks. Possibly fine study of the SY Chord wavetables will find ranges that go well together (there are abrupt changes that are better avoided by modulation) but that’s more keyhole work than design from principles.
the chord is cool but the filters applied to it do not seem to sound very creamy at least through my Sennheiser
The chords made with a Nord Lead are great notwithstanding it is a digital synth
