I too think sample/folder/file browsing is where the screen lets it down a little, 7 segments and 4 digits is fine for numerical stuff, but for words/letters it can be a bit cryptic.
But overall I agree that aside from this the screen isn’t needed much.
Edit: Still prefer the Deluge UI to something like MPC or Blackbox though, but I’m not really into touchscreens.
Following this thread as I contemplating getting a Deluge.
I’m in the process of paring down my setup. Out goes OP-1, OP-Z and SP-404SX. In comes something that can sample & loop nylon guitar + a better mic (not the internal Deluge mic) & maybe preamp.
My thought is that the Deluge could replace the OP-1, OP-Z and SP-404SX and improve upon those. For instance, the OP-1 (even with a ground loop isolator) and SP-404 bring a discernible amount of noise when sampling. In comparison to those dev devices, is the Deluge more “hi-fi”?
Also, the SP-404 seems really outdated when it comes to it’s ability to find a loop point quickly & accurately, as well incorporating multiple samples without needing to resample. Seems like the Deluge is comparatively smart on these fronts. Anyone care to share their experience?
Also, it seems like Synthstrom is a good and dependable company, with smart design and good quality control. In contrast, Teenage Engineering’s OP-Z, as cool as it is, still makes me feel like I have to sell it with disclaimers (about possible bowing & knobs popping out) on Reverb in order be in good conscience.
The Deluge holds its own very well for sampling, audio recording and looping. I’ve noticed no noise, certainly nothing like the OP-1 which is a goddam sand storm in comparison.
However, I do think it samples in 16 bit, not 24, and for some, that matters.
This was my only let down with the display, not to much reference needed once loaded. Other than that it was an awesome product. Not great sample play back device when you have a decent sample collection like Mars and multi sample packs. I’ve said it before, a models type screen would be perfect.
Well I had to check my notes to make sure, I wrote down the sample formats/times of all the samplers I have as I always forget, and often the info isn’t easy to find.
The onboard fx are pretty good for shaping the mix, but not so much for actual sound design. It’s easy to get the onboard stuff to sound over-processed. But if you use them in a subtle way, to enhance what’s already there and not try to warp them into something they’re not, I actually think they’re great. It responds really well to my mixer, the headroom is great in this thing, it really opens up when you route it through some external board.
Haha, now it’s coming back to me I still struggle to finish things with the Deluge with all these possibilities, it’s very tempting to just keep tinkering and never wrap stuff up. That’s on me, tho, not the Dellie
Any Delugers see Koka’s Youtube video where he shows his battery modificiation - put two more batteries inside to increase charge capacity. There’s no details (he is apparently going to do a separate video) but seems like wiring two more in parallel should be a simple mod.
A little something made with the Dellie. Field recordings are made directly with the Deluge. I figured I was gonna push the synth engine and polyphony, so this one isn’t about beats but about chords, long tails, clips going in and out from the arranger like there was no tomorrow -
Love my deluge to bits. But there are some things i would love even more, possibility to add an external display would be top notch, even if i had to buy an ipad for example.
So i could use the sampler in it better, see the waveforms and so on & so forth…
But besides, it´s getting better and better. The v3 upgrade was great and to switch case top was not simple since i had some hiccups but well worth it!
Looking forward to it playing wavetables and also hopefully some better FX, or with more parameters!
Also, if i could somehow make it play nice with Ableton it would be cool; like… making the arrangement in ableton with deluges instruments, and then push the sequence over to Deluge and have it absorb it.
