Synthstrom Audible Deluge [inc. Open Source development]

They are? Or are you just guessing?

Edit: Hey your right, just checked.

Based on their marketing, Iā€™d say a groove box. The main focus being a stand-alone, portable, music composing device. Things get more complicated when itā€™s also touted as a live machine and a ā€œbrainā€ of a setup.

Thereā€™s no way any device is going to do it all in the best way. I take what I can get out of it and am happy with that

The feature requests part is indeed odd to me. Users are still going to be posting feature requests all over the internet ā€¦ I think itā€™s helpful to have a place to point them to, in order to make their voice ā€œheardā€. What Iā€™ve done for larger companies in the past, is just email them directly (I doubt Synthstrom wants this though)

Added thereā€™s a detailed discussion on the synthstrom forums regarding this change. Take a look over there for motivations of the dev team and to join the conversation

Appreciate reading all the posts excited about MPE  I think Iā€™ll really love it when I get an appropriate controller

In contrast to my bitching:

Initial release of my SKB tool which can generate a KIT from a list of SYNTH files.

I did this mainly because I spent a lot of time creating a bunch of synthesized drums and then saved them as SYNTHs, because itā€™s far easier to work with individual sounds this way until such time that itā€™s possble to clone KIT lanes on the Deluge. It was only then I found out that itā€™s not possible to load SYNTHs into KIT lanes in the same way you can load samples. Thus SKB was born!

Please note this is a Python 3 project so youā€™ll need to be comfortable and setup for that. Full source code on GitHub of course but it is also available to install as a Python tool via Pip (instuctions included for installation).

All you need to do is mount your SD card in your computer and provide an XML file that describes the KIT youā€™d like generated e.g.

<?xml version='1.0' encoding='UTF-8'?> <synthkit> <drum synth="Drum Ks Basic 01.XML" name="" /> <drum synth="Drum Ks Dist 01.XML" name="" /> <drum synth="Drum Ks Basic Fm 01.XML" name="" /> </synthkit>

Please bear in mind that this is WIP and the initial release. Iā€™ve been testing it all day on my own Deluge SD card (it does write the generated KIT to your SD card in the KITS folder and will overwrite any files of the same name in that folder). Use at your own risk, no responsibility etc. Maybe back up your SD card first while you have a play (which would be handy for feedback!)

Also Iā€™m an OSX user and so have only tested it on OSX (Catalina). If anyone is willing and able to test on Windows for me (or I guess it should also work on Linux) that would be much appreciated.

Any ideas welcome though bear in mind it will never have a GUI or be any more sophisticated an experience than the command line

I made these a while back with the intention of making a much more complete set but Iā€™m ridiculously low on music-making time these days so I thought Iā€™d share them as they are.

They were originally made as SYNTH patches because itā€™s much easier to work on a single drum this way and save variations as you go. When you try to do this in a KIT you have to start from scratch every time because itā€™s not possible to load a synth into a kit lane or clone a kit lane.

I finally got around to putting them into KITS, for ease of use, with the tool I just released (SKB - which you can find in the Third Part section)

All drums sounds are 100% Deluge synthesis. Thereā€™s a variety of techniques in there which hopefully should inspire some exploration and learning. It also shows you that the synth engine can be pretty powerful and creative with a little efforts. I think theyā€™re all set to POLYPHONY: MONO so you might get some clicking when playing them quickly. I did this deliberately but you can always change them to POLY if you prefer.

Instructions: unzip the .ZIP. The individual sounds are in the ā€˜Synthsā€™ folder, the kits are in the ā€˜Kitsā€™ folder.

Iā€™ve spent a little while looking at MPE controllers in advance of 3.2 release, and I think for now Iā€™m just going to wait and see how it performs with the KB-1 app on iPad. Looking around more at MPE controllers it seems like for MPE input, a smooth/non-tactile interface like a glass screen on a tablet would actually be perfect when youā€™re wanting to slide, bend, and otherwise not run up against the boundary of a button or key.

Funny, since thatā€™s usally my biggest gripe about using on-screen keyboards on phones/tablets - thereā€™s no tactile feedback! But in this case it might be a huge benefit. Plus, I canā€™t imagine wanting every track be something using MPE, but the tablet does have the benefit of being quick and easy to pull out, plug in, and live record a couple tracks.

Linnstrument looks amazing, but I donā€™t think I can stomach something that costs as much as the Deluge just to use for playing it, not to mention the lack of battery power options for Linnstrument :frowning:

The linnstrument will run happily off of just USB powerā€¦ Iā€™ve actually been meaning to get mine working with a power bank and a widi adapter.

Thatā€™s good to know!

So Iā€™m mostly all ITB now, due to a coming move, but with tax refund and stimulus money I wanted a few little things to make more electronic stuff than the normal hiphop stuff I do. Today I ordered a deluge and an MC 101 to fuel sounds. Always was curious about it, letā€™s see how it goes.

Couple questions, does the multisamplers auto mapping work well with files created by the MPC autosample or sample robot?

And, what is the recommended SD card type for large cards? It says SDHC, but can it handle a larger (say 128 gb) SDXC?

No way to get the ā€˜pressā€™ and ā€˜liftā€™ dimensions of Roliā€™s MPE, though.

I donā€™t use either of those tools but Iā€™m guessing it will. The Deluge will try to calculate the pitch of each sample accordingly if they donā€™t map by rootkey tags (embedded in the sample file)

I think any card that can be formatted to FAT32 works. Check out this thread from the Synthstrom team:

Yeah, Iā€™ve been talking to a few folks on the Deluge discord about that actually. A certain subset of iPhones actually do have true pressure sensitivity support in KB-1. I wanna say itā€™s like iPhone 6S - iPhone X? For whatever reason, recent iPhones and all iPads donā€™t have the support for it. Hereā€™s a demo video from Drambo/KB-1 I took yesterday on my iPhone X:

so it can take 64gb and over, but 64gb cards slow or do they run fast on the deluge?

I havenā€™t used one but Iā€™d imagine it would be fine. Maybe ask over on their forums or Facebook

Iā€™m curious, and a bit worried, about whether it can capture seemless audio loops from external synths sequenced by the deluge over midi. With the OT, Akai force, Maschine +, I always had gaps at the front of the audio loop, and was never able to capture loops with good timing. Is this possible with the deluge, and what do you all consider the best way to go about this?

Yes, it does record perfectly timed audio loops using length from midi clip. Just leave only the midi you want to record and the audio track unmuted.

Ah yeah, I was only thinking about iPads. Itā€™s a real shame that Force Touch never made its way to iPads and has also now been abandoned on iPhones, the functionality would have been awesome for music apps.

(Also, whatā€™s the Discord address? Would like to join!)

Thanks!

No problem! Haha, got a big notification across my iPad right after I posted here showing u joined. Have to turn those off.

The Deluge also has a ā€œmarginsā€ options (pg 199 in the guidebook)

The Deluge introduces a very short crossfade, beginning just before the loop-point on audio clips. This reduces any audio ā€˜clickā€™ ā€¦ When margins are on, all audio clips recorded from external input sources (i.e. not MIX or OUTPut), will have these extra short ā€œmarginsā€ of audio recorded.
