That Jon Hopkins Album

Anyone else feeling this? Some mad fucking shit production and ideas wise, makes me wish I could take drugs but tbf it’s wicked as is. :metal:

Listened to it several times. I think it feels a bit like a copy of its predecessor. But anyhow, his production and sound design are so amazing, otherworldly. And I loved immunity so it’s not a real criticism.
The first tracks are banging, it all feels cinematic.
As a hobby producer, I feel very small listening to this

Yeah, same here. Sounds like an extension of the last one, but that’s fine with me! Not the most exciting stuff, but some really well crafted tunes that I know I’m going to spend quite a bit of time listening to. Technically top notch, and it’s got a nice feel to it as well.

Good interview about the process and gear on this new album.

Can’t wait to roll one up and play this loud.

I feel the first few tracks strike a nice balance between insides and the last album. Nicely melodic and brutal at the same time. It went a bit blah ambient after that for me. I thought it might have worked better if it was mixed up a bit more.

On immunity and the new album he made basically two sections.
Club section - ambient section. As nice as this ambient stuff is, I always find the first half to be more exciting.
I also think it would work better mixed up

I’m digging it. Sounds less orchestral than his other stuff to me.

It’s nice , need to listen a few more times.
Also like the recent rival consoles stuff , and I’ve been revisiting floating points tracks.

First time i listened to here. I like the ambient background noises but that repetitive drum beat sounds so dated. Its like im back in Ibiza from the 90s all over again.

Ibiza in the mid 90’s sounds quite nice actually

I also think the drum programming is very impressive, especially since these are mainly 4 to the floor beats. But they don’t sound like the average dance beats. A lot detail is going on here

Well, I have to echo the very same exact feeling. Same old, but good. Was expecting more of an exploration in sound design field. Obviously he knows what worked before, but hearing the very same sounds . . . To my ears it also somehow lacking some virtuosity in the mastering department - listen some of the HECQ recordings and you will fly away in terms of how the sounds are positioned and developed. I also did checked my cables of my headphones few times if maybe my cable popped from one channel and I hear mono (my hd25 sometimes do that), but it was ok. The album is good, but I have to be honest, not as groundbreaking as Immunity - where there was - at least for me - a certain hair rising tension from the first track to the last one. It was like sitting on the edge of a seat thru the album. And still does it for me even after zillions of listening sessions. Not this one. But who knows . . maybe it will grow on me later on.

I was not familiar with Jon Hopkins.

Is there a reason that so many of his videos have the comments disabled? Is this guy polarizing for some reason? Does lush reverb and analog filtered distortion bring out the haters now?

I don’t think so  He’s very celebrated for his last record immunity. And he seems to be a very nice guy.
But what do I know about haters…

To be fair i listened to Immunity and it does seem more original. The syncopation of the beats arent really unique despite wandering lfos imo. But good luck to the guy.

He’s doing alright, 1.5k venue in Glasgow sold out in like a day.

And co-writing Coldplay’s Ghost stories, as well as receiving contribution and production credits for Viva la Vida or death and all his friends, hopefully resulted in some monetary delight as well

Damn, news to me, that’s pretty cool! Also interesting to see that he hasn’t gone gear-crazy with the cash - still using the same old kaoss pads, still using the MS20 he got for Immunity, etc. I remember reading an interview for the last album where he said that he’s very cautious about adding new gear, making sure he’s learned the old stuff inside out before expanding.

He’s interviewed in future music this month , did a live session on radio6 to.
Seems like lots of polyrthyms , precise eq/ sounds , nice weird sidechain to create percussion effect.

The album isn’t a great departure for him , but he’s doing well and selling out venues quickly which I’m sure 99% of people on here would like to experience.
I would.

He’s also done work with Burial, Four Tet, Brian Eno, and some soundtrack work.
