The Guitar Thread

What’s your opinion on the Torpedo Captor? I’m thinking about getting one because our sound guy is always yelling at me. I also want a better cab sim than I have at the moment.

I know you didn’t ask me, but I am a big fan of two notes.
Get the captor x

captor x is twice as much. I don’t need stereo. Is there something else it does? I mainly need lower stage volume and a decent cab sim for sampling guitar without mic’ing my amp.

Regular captor doesn’t have the built in cab sim. X does. It’s a small sized torpedo live more or less

Agree with @VDB, Captor X.

Do you use the Torpedo loadbox and the HX Stomp at the same time?

Don’t know if it’ll work for you but check out the Simplifier. It’s awesome!

Everywhere I’'ve looked is sold out right now on the Simplifier. EDIT: found one. Trying to decide. You like it?

I love mine, only had/used for a month or so. In the limited time it’s pretty impressive. Love the stereo cab sim. It can sound super wide if that makes sense.

Edit: They have used/like new on Amazon for $249 as well.

I have one and I am super happy with it. As @papertiger said, the stereo cab Sim is something special! Sounds great in mono as well if you don’t have the channels for stereo.

I sold my Torpedos before HX Stomp…

Do you run yours into the SiX (and how) if you don’t mind me asking?

It’s in my cart. I’ll report back.

Seems interesting.
What is the cab sim technology?
Based in IR?

I’m not sure but below is the snippet from their site. Hope that helps. I picked it up after all the great reviews from users here. No pedals just clean played into headphones it sounds amazing.

POWER AMP SIM

This stage is an accurate approximation of the interaction between the power tubes, output transformer and global feedback, which produces a particular frequency response for different tubes and speakers. PRESENCE: Controls the hi-mids response just like the feedback based presence control on tube amps. Turn it up to cut through the mix or turn it down to sweeten aggressive distortions. RESONANCE: Controls the low-end and resonance peak caused by transformer-speaker interaction in tube amps. Now you can control the dampening factor and get super tight low-end clarity and authority. POWER TUBES SECTION: 3 way toggle switch that mimic the different response of classic tube types: EL34: Complex mid response with a compressed feel. 6L6: A more open and dynamic response with deeper bass and sparkling highs. KT88: Similar to 6L6 but with improved low-end range, perfect for bass or 7+ strings guitars.

STEREO CABSIM

Tweakable Cabinet simulator that takes the heritage and experience of ©DSM Noisemaker developing the most useful and innovative cabsims of the market. You can easily dial two independent cabinet simulators panned LEFT - RIGHT with MIC POSITION controls that responds as a real CENTER/OFF AXIS microphone position adjusting the precise amount of high-end roll off you look for. A three way toggle switch allows you to choose independent cabinet STYLE for each side. 1x12 Combo, 2x12 or big 4x12 cabinet simulations that you can combine with any of the 3 preamp voicings, adding an extra dimension to your sound development.

Thanks. What about Alnico II for neck and Alnico V for bridge?

Bare knuckle pickups are outstanding (I use the stormy monday PAF type pickups)

Yeah that is a classic combo. I havent spent any time trying that out. Its all gonna rock baby:).

As @Tokin_Tone says, those bare knuckles seem awesome but theyre even more expensive! Rave reviews though.

One thing i thought i remember you saying was you were looking for a bit more “gain”? I have opinions on this! Haha

Bare Knuckle are more than 4 times the price of gfs!

Tell me then!

I think I’ll get more gain anyway compared to my current floating pickup. The question will be do I keep it or not! (3 pickups).

Haha i totally missed the idea that you are wanting to MODIFY your guitar, not swap pickups. Sorry.

Maybe you are sure you want to add the humbuckers, but i would personally just replace the mini humbucker first. Undoubtedly some of the custom or upgrade mini’s will honestly blow your mind. The other thing to do is replace the tone capacitor. The good ones give a really nice filter sweep. If you decide to hit that guitar with the octave fuzz of the analog drive or whatever, a good cap, a good pickup, and a good fuzz will satisfy like a moog mono synth:).
