The Guitar Thread

I’d only spend the money on a custom shop guitar if I was 100% sure about all the specs:

  • Fingerboard radius
  • Neck shape (C, D, V, Deep C, etc.)
  • String spacing at nut
  • Woods
    …etc.

Well… looks like I have a loooong time to decide. Seems shops aren’t expecting SG Juniors until January at the earliest.

Thanks all for your input!!

Wanted to add, I am definitely trying before buying as per your advice @GovernorSilver @DimensionsTomorrow @finalform @samvanlan

But, I am 99 percent sure it’s either the USA Original or nothing. The CS has this ‘VOS’ aging which just rules it out for me altogether. It is not as much faux aging as a relic guitar, but it’s just not my thing. Nothing against anyone who likes that kind of stuff, just my own taste. Going to try both in person either way. Put a deposit down on both models, so once they are in stock, I will give them a try.

Also, from what I have read online, though the CS stuff seems to be top notch, it is only marginally better than the USA Original line. And more for people who are collectors and obsessed with the most minute historically accurate details (which I don’t care for at all, I just want a well made, long lasting guitar that plays well). I want to actually play this thing daily, for years to come.

Awesome! Looking forward to seeing a pic of the new guitar at some point. I’m sure you’ll love it!

Fender does similar stuff with their Custom Shop versions of their regular production guitars. Not saying all Fender CS is reliced, but a lot of them are.

Enjoy trying out both models!

Gibson Les Paul Studio Deluxe III

This was a limited series sold out of Guitar Center. The pickups are '57 plus and '57 classic with split coils. My wrist used to hurt while playing this, but then I started to play with a wrist brace on. That changed how I held the guitar and now I don’t have to wear the brace. I just changed the way that I play. Love this guitar.

I have a CS Gibson R8 (2016). It’s a stellar guitar.

I’ll not post this in the HW on sale thread as it’s not technically on sale but there’s an auction of many, many guitars and pedals occuring today:

Johnny Marr’s 9-pickup Spirit Strat is bananas!

And is he actually a better singer than Morrisey or is the key of the song just favorable for his vocal range?

Awesome guitar player. But that is one ridiculously dumb guitar

Conformity is for the suit-and-tie wearing classical and jazz crowds

I need to know how this is wired. Could it be kind of like the difference between using 9 oscillators v. 1 or 2?

Article seems to say all 9 are wired in series. Could be dead wrong though, who knows…

My Am. Elite Tele has a series switch. When engaged, it boost the heck out of the bass and overall volume, with a drop in highs. And that’s just 2 pickups…

I’m going guess that thing has zero sustain?

It’s all a bit Nigel Tufnell.

My Les Paul of Theseus. A recently purchased 1999 Gibson Les Paul Special (the only Gibson ever with a poly finish?) on which I performed the following surgery::

  • Pulled the P100s for P90s
  • rewired the electrics to 50s wiring
  • replaced the bridge with a locking Faber and the tuners with locking Grovers
  • replaced the tailpiece with a Vibramate to bolt on a Bigsby B7.
  • swapped the black knobs for reflectors

Finally (and most importantly), I DIY’d an Ilich noise cancelling dummy coil that I fitted into the control cavity. The P90s now have the same amount of noise as my '89 Les Paul Standard, while retaining the full P90 dynamic growl that just can’t be beat.

It’s now affectionately known as ‘The Rock Pig’ and covers everything my Jazzmaster used to while giving me Les Paul playability and high gain focus.

Here’s the video that was linked from the article.

Is the guitar’s sustain so poor that he can’t play this song? I think not.

Just having a go. That many magnets pulling at the strings. Totally bizarre.

hello, Is anyone using OT in amp fx loop? Any tips on gain staging or is that a terrible idea in general?
