It’s great. Hybrid SS / tube, great for home recording. I mix it with royer 121/ sm57 and that’s my setup for a wee while now. Has an effect loop also. No complaints.
Oh man, this Mu-tron iii is just amazing. I’ve been running this into a Way Huge Pork & Pickle, with a little spring reverb from my old Fender tank into my 70s Vibrochamp, and, oh lord, I’ve finally found my sound.
That combination sounds sick on bass as well.
It’s making me want to try other envelope pedals like the Analog Man Envelope Filter and the Dr Scientist Dusk.
You should check out the polyphase by ehx. It has envelope phasing which combined with an envelope filter sounds phenomenal
Cool. This wasn’t on my radar. I’ll check it out! I’ve been interested in stuff like the Mu-tron Biphase (ever since I learned it was heavily used by Lee Perry at Black Ark) and the Maestro PS-1A (Used on Who’s That Lady by Ernie Isley, when of my favorite guitar sounds of all time).
I honestly haven’t tried out my Strymon Deco or Flint (phasey trem) with this setup, so that’s where I need to go first.

Re midi synced guitar loopers, it’s surprising how hard it is to find those on the market (reliable ones!). As you say, the Ditto X4 allows for midi sync but isn’t very reliable on the sync.[/quote]
I had the Ditto x4 and just couldn’t get along with it. I sold it and recently picked up the EHX 1440 looper. It’s simple and has a solid MIDI sync, plus you can trigger loop start, play, etc. with program change messages. I’m really happy with it, and the price point is a lot easier to swallow than the Aeros, especially since I don’t want all the fancy stuff.
Now your going all deckard on it! It’s for sale actually. Not using fuzz these days.
A shout out to James Collins, luthier down in Kent. I met him to try a 1956 ES295 which I was going to sell everything to buy. But it was IMO old, not vintage. I learned about his own custom build guitars and ended up moving on my Collings electrics for these custom builds. Wonderful guitars, solid wood, all hand built. I had been on a long buy and sell phase trying different things but have ended that journey for electrics. Well maybe a strat at some point.
I think you should keep the soul bender. it’s pretty damn good and has NKTs which are soon to be unobtainium.
Sun Face spotted! Also NKT? Don’t sell it.
This thread has top fuzzes.
Yep. I had Analogman tweak the bias knob for me so that it would be a bit more spitty when dialed back. Love this thing. Rough and dirty with the sun knob to the left and super smooth with knob to the right.
I haven’t been following the availability of these, but now it makes sense why I saw an NKT analogman sunface sell for more than $1000 in Japan the other day. Definitely keeping mine.
This has some good footage of the analogman fuzzes.
Talking of pedal, I’ve recently gotten into Overloud TH-U. Previously I was using pedals, plus an analog amp sim pedal (Ethos Clean), but I found I really love TH-U.
For a start, I’m much more likely to twiddle knobs when I know I can revert to a saved state.
But mostly I just fire it up and play. The sound is great, it’s way more fun than a real amp, and I can easily feed my signal into any of Ableton’s sound-manglers.
Not to start the boring old digital vs analog debate, but I’m surprised at how great amp sims have gotten. And I can even run the same software on my iPhone!!
EDIT: I forgot to get to my point – I have zero pedal GAS now. I can do so much with apps, especially all the cool iPad sound-processing apps, which are so so cheap compared to actual pedals.
There’s some REALLY great sounding digital stuff these days, but the pendulum has swung the other way for me at the moment. I did a lot in the DAW for a couple of years, and I do agree that it’s much easier for recording to go that way, but right now I’m back to really enjoying analog stuff again, and I’m even recording to tape at the moment. I might add an analog modulation effect of some sort if I find the right one to replace what I’m using the Deco for (only if I find something I really like though, which I haven’t yet).
It took me many years to find the right amp for me and my space, but I absolutely love the Vibrochamp and reverb tank combo. I’d love to have a Princeton Reverb, but I just can’t handle the volume in my place.
That said, there’s obviously no way I could have an actual cranked Marshall or Bassman, so I’m very happy that digital is as good as it is. I’d love a real tape echo too, but I think I’m going to have to be satisfied with digital for that as well, and the Volante (and El Cap) are pretty amazing.
Part of it might just be nostalgia and part of me still values non-digital things. I’m not looking forward to the metaverse.
Again though, it’s a pendulum, so I’ll probably be back on that side at some point.
I dig it. Being that you can use a wide variety of IR’s with it make it really flexible (plus being able to midi control IR’s). It’s fun to just plug straight into a mixing board and totally crank a tube amp.
I actually haven’t plugged it into a speaker cab. I just got it so I could run DI. I have a bunch of other traditional tube amps with speakers already.
What are you using tape machine wise?
New video on the X-Pick going into more detail on playing techniques, recommended adjustments to pickup heights and effects settings like compressor, etc. Starts with a cute scifi story but if you’re not in the mood for that, skip to about 7 min.
They say the shipping notifications are going out. Haven’t gotten mine yet, but I’m sure it’s coming soon. I backed it of course: X-PICK No Magic Just Science | Indiegogo
