The Maximising Gear Thread

Sorry for the pun, and turning the table somewhat shamelessly on @De_wouzer 's classic.

This is not about maximising in the sense of getting more gear, though (aka every other thread). :smirk:
But making the most of your beloved older machines.

So, what experiment, or idea, which new technique or setup you could try out, did recently breathe new life into some of your older gear, changed your mind if you thought of maybe selling it?

Iā€™ll start with a simple one.

Iā€™ve been fiddling with the old Volca Sample some more recently, after finding that it pairs somewhat nicely with the Model:Cycles. It had gathered some dust after I brought in a DT.

Maybe I will finally try to make the sample pack for it, that I had planned doing for years. Still running stock samples for the most part. :joy:
Maybeā€¦

Turning it on would probably be the biggest change for me and most of my gear.

iā€™m big on processing sounds so running audio through my synthā€™s filters is my favorite thing

lol, I can relate.

yes, something I tend to keep overlooking, good one.

Buying a shelf unit and a bigger mixer so I can have all my synths set up and ready to go. No more synth desk shuffle, or pack up/unpack. Just turn them on, make tunes. Brilliant. Simple.

Essential.
Although I get inspired by shuffling around a bit, sometimes.

  1. Assign a number to each piece of gear
  2. Draw N numbers out of a hat, those are the pieces of gear you get to use today.
  3. Draw a new set of numbers tomorrow and repeat the process.

Donā€™t worry if you draw a delay, reverb and a MIDI controller. You CAN make sound with that combination.

Usually throwing some kind of modulation effect on top (mod delay, tremolo, bitcrush, etc) is enough to wake up old devices for me

Oblique strategies by Brian eno is quite an interesting idea.
Thereā€™s actual cards, a few apps and hereā€™s a site with them
http://stoney.sb.org/eno/oblique.html

The point isnā€™t to instruct but just to inspire an idea. The short phrases/ words are open to interpretation etc so it can be pretty good to just take an idea and roll with it

Playing guitar through the Digitoneā€™s distortion is way better than youā€™d expect.

Iā€™ve also been using the MIDI Guitar iPad app to play the Digitone with the guitar. I was having trouble holding down a trig while playing a chord, but I think 10.2.6 STEP RECORDING MODE will help with that.

Great tip. I will give it a shot.
Will I pick Analog Drive, Decksaver and Midi-Thru Box?

Great thread idea !
One thing I do a lot is to use synthesizer that have an audio input as send FX, either for their filter, onboard effect (spring reverb with the Grandmother for exemple), also using my eurorack FX like this when iā€™m not using those in a patch.
Itā€™s a great way to give any audio the ā€œcharacterā€ of your studio.

One trick I try to use is whenever Iā€™m watching a video of some equipment I donā€™t have and think ā€œI should get thatā€ I try to change my thinking into ā€œHow can I do what that does with what I have?ā€ it usually leads to fun workarounds and interesting sounds.

It also lead to my whole live setup.

Also works with trying to reproduce tracks you like.

Similar to this is watching videos about gear you already have.

Yeah this!

Instead of watching videos on new gear you donā€™t ow. Watch videos of old gear that you own!

Valid. Some OLEDs are getting pretty hard to decipher.

Nobody mentioned BBE yet.
Try that if OTā€™s too ā€˜flatā€™ for you

So glad itā€™s not just me!
I also think the practice of picking one box and only using that for an hour/week/month (whateverā€™s appropriate) is a winner. I have (many) boxes I still havenā€™t done this with
