Agree. Unison is nice and fat. Not worse than my OB-6 actually.
Funny. There is this other guy in this thread whi says everything is overdriven by default and you have to turn anything producing gain down to produce fat bass.
Havent heard a single example. Not here, not on youtube or soundcloud. Not in my studio. And trust me, I’ve looked for it. If you’d like to come up with THE sound bite that’s really gonna convince me I’d be happy to be wrong. Really.
How about you give an example? Name a track that has the kind of bass that isn’t possible with the A4? It has 2 sub oscs and 2 filters so not getting a punchy bass sound out of it is almost an accomplishment really. As with most of the Elektron stuff it takes a lot of taming to get it to even sit in the mix because of the huge bottom end.
Moderats A New Error is a good example for what sounds to me like a nice farty sequenced saw wave. Sure there’s a sub supporting it but the low mid is is I think really just a single fat osc.
Others - everything retrowave like Dynatron, Pilotpriest (manhunt!), Kavinsky. Heck, Siriusmo… gosh there’s so many. Basically every artist with a hang for analog sounding synths. Check out Liars Vox Tuned D.E.D for one unreal bass line (almost sure thats a modular tho). Nine Inch Nails Copy Of, also really simple but fat buzzy saw sequence. Should I go on?
Punchy bass doesn’t mean lots of low end rumble. Anyone can crank their EQ up at 50hz. It’s the character and the presence that make fat.
I’m sorry, but these kind of comments always seem ridiculous to me.
If this is true, it sounds to me like you might want to look more at your arrangements, or sound design / sound choices, or mixing skills etc. It’s a bizarre notion that all Elektron stuff has a wildly massive low end, as if all their gear is EQ’d to be hugely bassy or something…
Also worth noting that one of the regular lines of defence over the sound of the A4 is that it’s underwhelming sound makes it easier to fit in the mix!
probably done in NI Massive
or Razor…
Fair enough. I do want to look more at my arrangements and sound design, since I often struggle with the low end being muddy. Also my mixing skills are not exactly sick.
As for the A4 sounds, the presets alone show that the potential is there. Does everyone have the patience to learn how to create dope sounds with it? Obviously not.
I really like the sound of A4 so it inspires me to use it more and make new discoveries, most of which would never happen with any other synth I’m aware of.
Cool track and bass sound, although my guess would be that its not made using analog gear.
About the low end rumble I would agree.
If it’s good for you and you like it, that’s great. Enjoy!
Learning in these areas never ends. Perhaps seeking some advice to improve knowledge and skills would be helpful - there are some good people here to help.
Meantime,
– again, the presets are often used to dismiss negative opinions on the sound, with people suggesting they don’t show how good the A4 can be… Perhaps you haven’t had much experience playing / using / sound designing with other analog synths yet?
People. It’s time to put the stick on the table and show what you talk about. Fat bass is not a precise term at all.
Sure why not? Is that important?
If I had to bet though, I’d surely wouldn’t put my money on Razor.
Would you be so kind and show off those dope sounds finally?
I’m having my A4 since 5 years and can operate most of the functions by just muscle memory.
not for you obviously.
Just wanted to mention it. They said they made the nearly the whole album with massive. Just a little extra info love that bass
The basic character is replicated quite ok, chapeau!
But I find it neither lively nor fat. It sounds like layered frequencies instead of one fat wholesome sound.
Edit: should have said „fullsome“ shoutout to NB
Well, here’s a question… Does anyone know of a serious artist who consistently uses the A4 as a bass synth? There’s a reason that most use Moogs etc etc. The ultimate baseline weapons thread has some pretty entertaining suggestions, but I’m not sure that even the A4 comes up much as something which is good for bass… And experience tells me I certainly wouldn’t choose an A4 for bass duties on a serious gig or session, not when there are much better tools for the job
I knew that extra info. Doesn’t mean anything except they get money from NI. They’re actually ising modulars a lot, too. And wooden palettes. (source: liner notes / zündfunk)
I know a lot of hobbyists that use moogs for bass, does that make them any less serious for serious bass?
